Radio modems boast up to 3km range

A Celsum Technologies product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team Oct 17, 2005

A new range of radio modems allow communications along serial links without the need for a licence for through-the-air distances of up to 3km, or in some cases, further.

Celsum Technologies is now offering a range of state-of-the-art radio modems to allow communications along serial links without the need for a licence for through-the-air distances of up to 3km, or in some cases, further.

The easy-to-use radio modems are programmable to work on RS232, RS422 or RS485 serial links at data speeds up to 19,200baud, and are available with a range of antennas and other accessories.

They may be used licence-free at broadcast power outputs up to 0.5W, but, with an appropriate licence, can broadcast at up to 10W.

Radio modems provide a very convenient way of linking two devices without the need for laying cables, making such things as ship to shore and mobile telemetry possible.

Additionally, they are extremely useful for monitoring remote installations and extending networks whether in the field, on a process plant, or in the laboratory.

They are ideal for security and safety monitoring applications, as well as for collecting engineering, scientific, production, process and administrative data.

Said Celsum Technologies' Managing Director, Roy Carter: "These radio modems are a welcome complementary addition to our range of process control and strain gauge conditioning instruments".

"Also, they enhance our range of serial to USB and serial to Ethernet connectivity products".

The radio modems are ETSI approved, operate from a 9 to 30V DC supply, allowing them to be powered via mains-based supplies or from an optional battery pack, and may be configured from a PC or, optionally, from a built-in keypad with LCD.

Additionally, they operate at UHF frequencies which will transmit through walls etc.

The radio modems have a user-selectable error-correction mode, and may be programmed to operate as a repeater station to cover longer distances.

An evaluation kit consisting of two modems with quarter-wave antenna, cables and software is available.
