CIL Custom Interconnect has opened a new 400m2 factory in Crewkerne, Somerset, for product finishing and final assembly and test.

Although CIL has invested heavily in automation at its headquarters in Whitchurch, Hants, the growth of the company required a dedicated product finishing and assembly facility.

These activities are labour intensive, and Crewkerne was chosen because of the availability of a highly skilled labour force in that area.

Chief executive, Nick Edwards, explains: "Our state-of-the-art, in-line manufacturing facilities at Whitchurch are highly automated and the work to be carried out at Crewkerne requires different staffing and skill requirements.

Crewkerne is ideal because it is close to Whitchurch and we can call on a local pool of labour that is highly skilled and has a wealth of manufacturing experience".

Boards will be populated in Whitchurch and then moved to Crewkerne for hand finishing, including soldering, microscope work and final assembly.
