CIL, an electronic manufacturing and design company, has invested to put it in a position to work with customers on trial projects involving lead-free manufacture.

Over the past 12 months CIL, a Whitchurch based electronic manufacturing and design company, has either purchased new or upgraded existing reflow ovens, solder printers and SMT placement equipment so as to be in a position to work with customers on trial projects involving lead-free manufacture Managing director, John Boston, said: "The ROHS directive requires that by July 2006 electrical products must not contain any lead and other possibly harmful materials

With this issue one has a choice; either to bury one's head in the sand and hope it doesn't happen or be ahead of the game.

We have adopted the latter approach as we consider it our role to help our customers make the transition to lead-free as simple as possible.

"We are already working with customers on several projects and the trials are very advanced with a number of companies going 100% lead-free within the next two to three months, well before the July 2006 deadline.

We plan to shift all of our customers from HASL to a gold or silver finish PCB within the next 12 months.

Running concurrently with this we will be moving over to SnAgCu terminated components.

"We accept that there will be problems and it is component changeover that is likely to prove most difficult as situations are bound to occur where both older and obsolete components will not be available with lead-free terminations and there will be no alternatives.

All of these problems will have to be resolved and we are determined to be in a position to do so.".
