USB2 peripheral provides digital signature

Cypherix has developed an Evidence Enrolment USB2 peripheral that digitally signs audio recordings as well as external files submitted on the USB2 link.

The technology ensures that all information enrolled, whether audio recordings or USB2 submitted files, are permanently secured so it can be shown in a court of law that the information is original and unchanged.

The combination of voice and submitted data file certification allows the user to enrol electronic information in an auditable manner as the interview recording clearly captures the interaction between all parties.

All enrolment can be done securely while the enrolling PC is off line.

This system is specifically designed to secure information in non-networked situations.

When using the Evidence Enrolment USB2, each enrolment session creates its own 'one time' 1024-bit RSA key pair that is used to sign all information, thereby strongly linking the enrolled evidence together.

All information can be placed in a single composite file, which contains all enrolled elements during the session.

This file is sent across the USB interface for storage on the host PC.

Digital certificates issued include date and time stamps.

The audio stream is certified and added to the composite file as part of the session.

All microphone inputs are summed together into a single audio stream prior to certification.

The unit has two balanced standard microphone inputs.

It supplies 18V phantom power and offers a signal-to-noise ratio better than 50dBs.

THD is less than 1 per cent.

All files are individually certified and added to the session composite file.

This results in a single file that contains all the evidence, but as each element has its own signature it can be unpacked from the composite file and sent to its own database.

All control of the device is done from the host PC.

A Windows XP SDK is supplied as well as a control GUI.

All files to be signed can be browsed for or placed in an import directory for signature.

The composite file is placed in an export directory.

Each file has a unique name to avoid duplication.

A standalone program is also supplied to allow the extraction of all signed elements and audio wav files.

The digital signature of each component is checked and an Adobe report file of the checking process can be provided during the validation process.

The devices use less than 500mA, which can be supplied from the USB cable.

The USB Evidence Enrolment device is housed in a strong aluminium casing.

The audio connectors use 3.5mm stereo jacks and there is a headphone monitoring point to allow an operator to check on the audio quality.

A 5V -7.5V external power supply can be used although in most applications the USB2 interface is sufficient to power the device.
