Transceivers fast enough for 10Gbit Ethernet

Cypress Semiconductor has launched its HOTLink III (high-speed optical transceiver link) family of transceivers with samples of functional 3.125Gbit/s quad-channel devices.

Designed for both backplane and port applications, the new physical-layer device (PHY) is the first of a family of 3.125Gbit/s transceivers the company is bringing to the market.

The CYP32G0401DX is a quad-channel transceiver that has a wide operating range of 2.488 to 3.125Gbit/s per channel.

This highly configurable device can bypass 8B/10B encoding and can support many different modes of operation allowing it to fit into a variety of backplane and box-to-box applications whether they be standardised, such as InfiniBand, or proprietary.

The CYP32G0401DX is compatible with the 10 Gigabit Ethernet Auxiliary Universal Interface (XAUI), the 10 GigE Media Independent Interface (XGMII) and the InfiniBand standard.

Using all four channels at 3.125Gbit/s, the device meets the standards requirements for 10 GigE system ports.

Cypress's HOTLink transceivers provide port and backplane solutions to move serial data at rates ranging from 50Mbit/s to 10Gbit/s.

The flexible HOTLink, HOTLink DX, HOTLink II and HOTLink III devices conform to many industry standards such as Fibre Channel, Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, InfiniBand, Enterprise System Connection (ESCON), Digital Video Broadcast (DVB), Society of Motion Picture Television Engineers (SMPTE) and High-Definition Television (HDTV).

HOTLink devices communicate over a variety of media, including fibre, coaxial and twisted-pair cables.

Samples of the CYP32G0401DX HOTLink III quad-channel transceiver packaged in a 256-ball BGA are available now and will be priced at $70.00 in 10,000-piece quantities.
