Reference design for USB On-the-Go

Cypress Semiconductor is claiming a first for its USB embedded host/peripheral controller reference design that implements the new On-the-Go supplement to the USB 2.0 specification.
USB On-The-Go (OTG), a supplement to the USB 2.0 specification, adds functionality to USB to support portable devices.
It addresses the specific requirements of these products such as the need for low power and smaller connectors, and it provides a new, limited host capability.
USB OTG products can communicate with each other without needing to be connected to a computer; for example, a USB OTG mobile phone can interface directly with an OTG-compatible digital still camera.
Additional applications include mobile phones, PDAs and cable set-top boxes.
All USB OTG products will maintain their function as USB 2.0 certified peripherals.
Cypress's SL811HR_OTG prototype board combines the industry's first embedded USB host/peripheral controller (SL811HS) and SL11R microcontroller, allowing customers to quickly create portable solutions that are compliant with the recently released USB OTG supplement.
The reference design includes schematic diagrams; design documentation; samples of the SL811HS and SL11R devices; firmware; an assembler; a compiler; and technical support.
"As a member of the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), Cypress has been a key contributor to the success of USB in the PC market space", said David Cobbs, Product Manager for Cypress's Personal Communications Division and the USB OTG Working Group Chairman.
"I'm convinced that USB OTG will greatly expand the range and ease of use of USB into entirely new markets".
"Designers will benefit from this first-to-market reference design for their USB OTG requirements", said Paul Novell, director of marketing for Cypress's Personal Communications Division.
"The design kit enables customers to create a true USB mobile or embedded-host device that can perform host functions independent of a PC.
It also confirms Cypress's commitment to provide the industry's widest range of USB products.
Our broad portfolio of USB solutions provide our customers with the options to design and market value-rich products".
