Cypress Semiconductor has developed a combination USB-PS/2 optical mouse reference design for PC pointing devices Cypress collaborated with Agilent Technologies to offer a low-cost, full-featured optical mouse solution based on the Cypress CY7C63723 enCoRe (enhanced component reduction) USB microcontroller and Agilent's ADNS-2051 optical mouse sensor

"By coupling Cypress's industry-leading low-speed USB microcontrollers with Agilent's state-of-the-art optical navigation technology, we are able to offer a cost-effective solution that will further enable the optical mouse to become the preferred solution over the traditional mechanical 'ball' mouse", said Paul Novell, director of Marketing at Cypress' Personal Communications Division.

The Cypress CY7C63723 enCoRe device features Cypress's proprietary M8 controller core - the industry's smallest - along with an integrated USB serial interface engine (SIE) and transceiver; integrated EPROM plus RAM for storage and data buffering; and optimised output drivers for EMI reduction.

Focusing on system cost reduction, Cypress' enCoRe family of USB microcontrollers employs an internal crystal-less oscillator - eliminating the need for an external crystal or resonator - and integrates several other components typically found off-chip in low-speed USB applications, such as pull-up resistors, wake-up circuitry and a 3.3V regulator.

The ADNS-2051 is a new addition to Agilent's pioneering line of optical mouse sensors.

Like its predecessors, the new IC is a complete mouse navigation engine on a single chip, integrating an image sensor with a digital signal processor and an LED driver.

With improved tracking performance and twice the resolution - 800cpi - the ADNS-2051 enables smoother, faster and more precise navigation control for both corded and cordless computer mice.

A new combi-USB-PS/2 optical mouse reference design is available as a complete resource for developers to use and customise their own designs.

Configured for a standard three-button mouse with flexible I/Os allowing expansion to five buttons, data flows between the two chips across the ADNS-2051 SPI interface.

The design uses a single cable capable of connecting to a PC via a USB or PS/2 connector with an adapter.

It will automatically detect the type of interface attached, enabling a USB- or PS/2-only mouse option.

The EPROM-based microcontroller allows easy firmware modification, as well as storage of vendor and product IDs without an external EEPROM.

The new joint optical mouse reference design kit includes a sample mouse with complete schematics, layout and firmware.

It is currently available from Cypress as the CY4622 and is priced at $199.

Agilent will offer its own version of the kit later this quarter.
