Wireless chip connects novel gyro mouse

Gyration, a Thomson company, is using Cypress's WirelessUSB radio-system-on-a-chip in its latest wireless mouse and keyboard.
Powered by Gyration's motion-sensing gyroscope - the MG1101 MicroGyro - the new Gyration product enables mouse-like cursor controllability with the ability to move freely around the home or office, and without the need of a flat surface.
Coupled with a compact keyboard equipped with 15 Internet/multimedia hot keys, this wireless desktop set is ideal for both media centre/home entertainment PC owners and gaming enthusiasts.
"Gyration products provide effortless remote cursor control that allows users to roam freely around the office or home".
"With the powerful range of WirelessUSB, users can just sit back on the couch and surf the Internet or watch their favourite DVD", said Tom Quinn, Senior VP and General Manager of Gyration.
"WirelessUSB provides unparalleled interference immunity to assure uninterrupted performance in the presence of other 2.4GHz systems such as Bluetooth or cordless phones".
"Gyration technology translates natural hand movements and gestures into cursor control and commands", said Marcus Kramer, Managing Director of the Wireless Business Unit in Cypress's Consumer and Computation Division.
"We are pleased that WirelessUSB has been chosen to be part of this unique solution that exemplifies our vision of enabling the 'unwired' life".
"This design win continues our momentum with leading HID manufacturers worldwide".
The MG1101 MicroGyro is a low-cost, dual-axis miniature-rate gyroscope that is fully self-contained for easy integration into human input devices such as human motion tracking, computer pointers, TV remote controllers, game controllers, robotics, factory automation, antenna stabilisation and auto navigation.
The MG1101 includes an integrated analogue-to-digital convertor (ADC) and communicates via a conventional two-wire serial interface bus allowing a user or OEM to connect the device directly to a microcontroller with no additional hardware.
WirelessUSB, offered by both Cypress and its second-source partner, Atmel Corp, delivers the best combination of performance and cost versus competing wireless technologies.
Featuring a highly integrated radio transceiver plus digital baseband on a single chip, WirelessUSB enables designers to significantly decrease development time, component count and system cost while improving operating range, power-consumption and latency.
The DSSS (direct sequence spread spectrum)-based technology is robust to interference and has claimed 88 design wins to date.
