In less than a year Cypress Semiconductor has shipped over 20 million units of its new family of low-cost high-speed USB controllers with the industry's lowest power consumption.

In less than a year Cypress Semiconductor has shipped over 20 million units of its new family of low-cost high-speed USB controllers with the industry's lowest power consumption The new EZ-USB LP (low power) controllers, introduced in April 2005, take advantage of Cypress's 0.13-micron C8 process technology to reduce dynamic and standby power consumption by nearly 50% versus leading competitors

The devices allow peripherals to operate from the power of the USB bus, significantly extending battery life.

The EZ-USB LP family features best-in-class parameters including the smallest package (5 x 5mm VFBGA) and the first-ever industrial grade USB 2.0 microcontrollers.

EZ-USB LP controllers have been rapidly accepted by applications such as mass storage, docking stations, video capture, mobile phones, PMP players, PC-TV (enabling Digital Video Broadcast TV on PCs) cards and USB Flash drives.

"As connectivity needs change for fast-converging electronics applications, Cypress has maintained leadership in the USB market by understanding the emerging needs of our customers and aggressively pursuing increases in the performance of our offerings", said Rich Kapusta, Business Unit Director of Cypress's High Speed Peripherals business unit in the Consumer and Computation Division.

"Shipping 20 million units in less than a year is testament to the fact that the EZ-USB LP family is the right product, and that our product designers have delivered on our promise of performance".

"We have achieved best-in-class USB 2.0 high speed physical layer performance in terms of power consumption and die size through the use of patented analogue design techniques", said Joseph Cetin, Senior Design Engineering Manager for Cypress USB Products.

"The EZ-USB LP family also provides unmatched flexibility with its programmable digital architecture".

"The net result is a widely accepted line of products catering to a vast variety of applications".

Cypress is shipping three EZ-USB product families.

The EZ-USB NX2LP family is designed specifically for NAND Flash memory control applications.

Its flagship product, the EZ-USB NX2LP-Flex, is the world's first firmware-programmable USB 2.0 high speed NAND Flash controller.

The controller is driving convergence in consumer electronics by enabling USB Flash drives with features such as fingerprint authentication and video-over-USB, and dongle applications like DVB/PCTV cards, GPS receivers, and wireless presenters with NAND Flash storage.

The EZ-USB FX2LP programmable controllers can be configured for use in a wide range of applications, including TV tuner cards, personal video recorders (PVR) and feature rich mass-storage systems such as hard drives with single button backup capabilities.

The EZ-USB FX2LP family includes the world's smallest USB 2.0 microcontollers (5 x 5mm VFBGA) and world's first industrial grade USB 2.0 microcontrollers.

The EZ-USB AT2LP family addresses the ATA/ATAPI and Compact Flash-based storage products including microdrives, magnetic hard drives, optical drives (CD-R/RW and DVD-R/RW) and CF cards.

Microdrives are increasingly finding homes in mobile applications such as MP3 players, mobile phones and portable media players (PMP).

The EZ-USB NX2LP, EZ-USB FX2LP, and EZ-USB AT2LP families all have typical current consumption (Icc) of just 50 mA, enabling peripherals to enumerate at well below 100mA USB-IF bus power specification with ample margins to implement additional features.

Competing solutions typically consume 80-110mA.

All three families of EZ-USB products are USB-IF certified and are in mass production.

EZ-USB NX2LP devices are offered in a lead-free 56-pin QFN package, EZ-USB FX2LP devices are offered in lead-free 56-pin VFBGA, QFN and SSOP and 100- and 128-pin TQFP packages, and EZ-USB AT2LP devices are offered in lead-free 100-pin TQFP and 56-pin SSOP and QFN packages.
