USB controllers pass half a billion

The controllers, which began shipping in 1997, are used in a wide array of USB host and peripheral consumer devices.

Cypress offers the industry's most complete portfolio of USB devices, including low-, full- and high-speed controllers, hosts, hubs, bridges and wireless solutions.

Fueled by growing consumer demand in USB-enabled applications such as mice, keyboards, hubs, media and video players, mobile phones, mass storage (external hard disk drives and enclosures), set top boxes, photo printers and video capture peripherals, Cypress shipped over 130 million USB controllers in 2005, the most in its history, and is already approaching 600 million units shipped.

"Cypress has earned its market leadership position in USB by offering an ever-expanding portfolio of controllers and working with customers to help adapt the products to new, innovative applications", said Steven Larky, Managing Director for Cypress Semiconductor's USB product line.

"In the past six months alone we have introduced the first MoBL-USB product for mobile phones, an automotive infotainment controller, and a device optimised for industrial applications, a clear demonstration of the universal reach of USB".

Cypress recently announced that it has shipped over 20 million units of its new EZ-USB LP family of low-cost, high-speed USB controllers.

The new controllers, introduced in April of 2005, take advantage of Cypress's 0.13-micron C8 process technology to reduce dynamic and standby power consumption by nearly 50% versus leading competitors.

EZ-USB LP controllers have been rapidly accepted by applications such as mass storage, docking stations, video capture, mobile phones, media and video players, PC-TV (enabling digital video broadcast TV on PCs) cards and USB "thumb drives".
