Nonvolatile SRAMs (nvSRAMs) internally store data when power is lost, with no battery required.

Cypress Semiconductor has introduced the first products in a family of nonvolatile SRAMs (nvSRAMs) that internally store data when power is lost, with no battery required The elimination of the external battery enables Cypress to deliver the RoHS-compliant, high-speed devices in smaller packages than alternative solutions

The nvSRAMs are ideal for any application requiring continuous high-speed writing of data and absolute nonvolatile data security, such as RAID applications, copiers, PoS terminals, handheld meters, and consumer electronics products.

Cypress's nvSRAMs use a charge stored on an external capacitor instead of a battery, allowing the devices to be manufactured on a standard PCB assembly process for low cost.

The devices offer data retention for a minimum of 20 years.

Operating with access times as fast as 25ns, the nvSRAMS are available in 1Mbit/3V, 256Kbit/3V, 256Kbit/5V, 64Kbit/5V and 16Kbit/5V configurations.

The devices are highly scalable, with all of the configurations available in small 32-pin SOIC packages and the 1Mbit and 256Kbit devices also available in 48-pin SSOP packages.

"As a long-term leader in both SRAM and nonvolatile memory, Cypress is well positioned to serve this market", said Tom Surrette, Vice President of nonVolatile Memory for Cypress.

"Nonvolatile SRAMs are quickly gaining market acceptance due to their high speed and small packages, along with their reliability and ease of integration into our customers' manufacturing flows".

In RAID applications, nvSRAMs offer high-speed data transfer while ensuring data integrity in case of power outages.

For copiers, nvSRAMs deliver fast data access and eliminate the need for a battery.

Handheld meters benefit from the data buffering provided by nvSRAMs for fast access to data being uploaded to a server.

Cypress's nvSRAM family is currently sampling, with production starting in July 2006.

Pricing for the 256Kbit device starts at under $9.70 in 1000-unit quantities.
