Programmable clock is first with low jitter

A Cypress Semiconductor product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team May 22, 2007

Single-chip programmable clock generator offers a low period and cycle-to-cycle jitter output as low as 60ps for the most commonly used frequencies.

New from Cypress Semiconductor Corp the CY22180 is a single-chip programmable clock generator that offers a low period and cycle-to-cycle jitter output of below 75ps for its entire output frequency range, reaching as low as 60ps for the most commonly used frequencies.

The low-jitter device delivers the precision clocking required by networking equipment such as routers and switches, as well as by consumer, communication and industrial applications.

The CY22180 clock is available in field-programmable or factory-programmable options, providing quick sample turn and time to market, along with easy inventory management.

The flexible device has a programmable output frequency with a wide range of 20 to 200MHz, making it suitable for multiple applications and platforms.

The CY22180 includes an integrated phase-locked loop (PLL) to generate custom frequencies from an external crystal or a driven source.

"The high-precision CY22180 is the first device to provide the fast time to market of programmable clocks to designers of systems that require low jitter", says Mehdi Behnami, Product Marketing Manager in the General Purpose Clocks Business Unit at Cypress.

"It enhances our comprehensive portfolio of high performance programmable clock generators and timing distribution products".

The CY22180 offers a single programmable output as well as an optional copy of the input frequency.

The device has an on-chip reference oscillator that is designed to run off a 10 to 30MHz crystal, or a 10 to 133MHz external clock signal.

The CY22180 comes in a small 8-pin SOIC package and requires a 3.3V power supply.

The versatile clock operates in commercial and industrial temperature ranges.

The CY22180 low-jitter clock is now in production and is priced under US $1.50 each in high volume.

Cypress offers in-house programming of samples and prototype quantities of the device using the CY3672-USB programming kit and the CY3619 socket adapter.

Users can custom-configure the CY22180 with the web-based CyberClocks online software.

Production quantities are available through Cypress's value-added distribution partners or by using third-party programmers from BP Microsystems and others.
