Cypress Semiconductor Corp has developed a novel CMOS image sensor solution for the InPhase Tapestry holographic data storage system Cypress and InPhase have been working since 2005 to develop an ultrasensitive and ultrafast CMOS image sensor to meet the high-speed reading of data recorded by InPhase's Tapestry drive

The Cypress CMOS imager features a digital interface and is sized with a pixel count of 1696 x 1710 and a pixel pitch of 8um.

The imager enables data to be read at 500 frames per second.

"Cypress's imaging expertise was critical to the development of our holographic drive", says Nelson Diaz, CEO of InPhase.

"We have largely redefined how information is stored and read for next generation recording devices - and Cypress has played a significant role in that endeavour".

Holographic storage delivers high capacity by recording data throughout the volume of the recording material, and not just on the surface.

With each flash of the laser, a data page of approximately 1 million bits is recorded.

Each data page is located at a unique address within the material and several hundred pages of data, each with their own unique address, are recorded in the same location of the medium.

Each of these collections of data pages is then referred to as a "book".

This new recording technique enables more holograms to be stored in the same volume of material by overlapping not only pages, but also books of data.

This dramatically increases the storage density.

Cypress's customer specific CMOS image sensor designs address applications such as high-speed motion analysis, industrial and medical X-ray imaging, endoscopy, barcode readers, high-speed line sensors, and star tracking and remote sensing for space.

Cypress's new sensor offerings address the trend to have digital LVDS outputs for high-speed sensors, as demonstrated with proven custom designs for holographic data storage readers.

Cypress's custom image sensor approach is to provide full turnkey solutions for customers, including design services, package and test development, product prototyping and characterisation, production setup and production logistics management.
