Datasound Laboratories (DSL) is to offer a complete range of 386 performance platforms with a guaranteed 5 year lifespan.

Datasound Laboratories (DSL) is to offer a complete range of 386 performance platforms with a guaranteed 5 year lifespan.

For volume applications it is offering a rapid turn around bespoke design service employing those same parts.

The 386 CPU has been a popular choice for many OEMs over the years.

However, with the desktop PC market directly affecting processor engines and CPU cards within the embedded market, OEMs were forced to migrate to Pentium or higher performance platforms.

This is not because the application demands it, but because the 386 CPUs and support chipsets are no longer manufactured.

DSL is one of the UK's leading suppliers of custom and standard form factor solutions and through its relationship with the Taiwanese CPU chip provider DM and P is able to meet the 5 year requirement for both 386 CPUs and the support chipsets.

Derek Carpenter, Managing Director at DSL said: "This has meant that OEMs have been forced to bear the costs of unplanned (re)development and the effects can be far reaching".

"By offering a guaranteed 5 year availability, OEMs are able to extend the life of their current product range and provide the necessary breathing space for structured evolution to the future needs of their expanding client base".
