Once onboard power (typicaly5V or 3.3V for digital systems) has been isolated from its backplane bus (typically 48V for IT equipment), additional isolation is unnecessary.
If a designer requires onboard 1.5-3.3V power, it is considerably less expensive to generate that power from the 5V source, using nonisolated techniques, than to employ additional isolated DC/DC convertors to generate it from the backplane bus.
USNs are pin compatible with similar devices from Lucent/Tyco, Artesyn Technologies and Power One.
USNs, however, deliver more current (10A versus the competition's 6A), from a smaller package (2.0in long versus.
the competition's 2.5in long), with better accuracy (+1% maximum), tighter regulation, less noise and superior temperature performance.
USNs exploit a 200kHz, fully synchronous, buck topology to achieve their electrical performance.
Their high efficiencies (to 91%) enable them to boast superior temperature performance.
If a USN SIP is operated at only 6A, for example it can reliably operate up to +65C (with 100lfm airflow).
Competing devices require more airflow and begin to derate at significantly lower temperatures.
Synchronous rectification also enables stable no-load operation - an important consideration for power-conscious applications that have portions of circuits going to "sleep mode".
The fully functional USNs feature input undervoltage shutdown, output overcurrent detection (at 120% of rated load), continuous short-circuit protection, a wide range output-voltage trim function, a remote on/off control pin, and an optional sense pin.
For those who require it, a "power-good" function can be added, and for those wanting 100% compatibility with Lucent/Tyco's NH020 Series, Datel can invert the polarity of the USN's industry-standard on/off control function.
