Active matrix OLEDs offer alternative to
LCDs

High contrast ratio, microsecond response times and an unlimited viewing angle make AMOLED displays particularly suitable for applications involving video playback.

Densitron has a new range of displays based on innovative active matrix OLED (AMOLED) technology The newly added displays have vivid colours, operating temperature ranges from -20 to +60C, low power consumption and are available in sizes ranging from 2 to 4.3in, measuring between 1.3 and 2mm in thickness

AMOLED technology is based on a multilayer organic film placed between an anode and cathode on an array of thin film transistors.

By applying an electrical pulse to each transistor in the array, individual pixels will be illuminated.

Compared with traditional backlit transmissive technologies, AMOLEDs consume considerably less power as they use an emissive technology: each pixel emits its own light and consumes no power at all when not illuminated.

The exact power consumption of an AMOLED display will vary according to the image displayed but it consumes between 25 and 60% less power than that of a panel which employs a conventional display technology, such as TFTs.

Apart from the size and power consumption advantages, an AMOLED display also offers a high contrast ratio (readable in sunlight), a response time of only a few microseconds and an unlimited viewing angle, making it suitable for many applications including those involving video playback.

Besides, the new displays come with serial, digital RGB (18 or 24bit) and MPU interface options with 256K or 16 million colours, and up to WQVGA resolution depending on the panel.

This makes them suitable for applications where small TFTs are used.

Densitron's Product Manager Elijah Ebo states: "Densitron is delighted to provide complimentary technical support assurance on its range of CMEL AMOLED displays".

"We also offer a series of easy-to-use USB based evaluation kits that facilitate software prototyping and the sampling of the new technology".

"It is very exciting for Densitron to add this complementary range of AMOLED displays to our extensive solutions".

"We are very pleased to be working closely with a major partner like CMEL", comments Densitron Displays' Managing Director Grahame Falconer. Request a free brochure from Densitron Display Solutions ...
