Memory controller IP cuts Flash system
costs
Next-generation high-speed BCH error correction code technology for NAND Flash memory claims order-of-magnitude performance improvement at lower costs.
Denali Software has unveiled its next-generation high-speed BCH error correction code (ECC) technology for NAND Flash memory, which delivers a significant order-of-magnitude performance improvement, while reducing silicon overhead and bill of materials (BoM) cost associated with NAND memory subsystems The new technology, as part of Databahn memory controller IP product, is used by hardware engineers in deploying robust NAND Flash-based systems

Software takes on SoC register management
New software boosts SoC design efficiency by automating the generation and management of the vast numbers of on-chip control registers in complex chip designs.
The advanced solution addresses key issues associated with single-level cell (SLC) and multilevel cell (MLC) NAND and provides significant advantages for system boot applications.
Flash has become a primary storage medium for various consumer electronic devices, including personal media players, high-end cellphones, navigation devices and solid state drives.
Today's system developers require a comprehensive hardware and software solution that addresses all of the performance and reliability requirements for future flash devices using smaller geometries and bit cells.
"System manufacturers face a huge challenge to integrate various NAND chips into their systems", states Nam Hyung Kim, Director and Principal Analyst at iSuppli Corporation.
"Therefore, flexible solutions and technologies, developed to speed up OEMs' time to market and to save BOM costs effectively, represent a large market opportunity".
The new technology is an innovative layer built on top of a Bose, Ray-Chaudhuri, Hocquenghem (BCH) algorithm.
As Flash has been used for the last few years, controller manufacturers have realised that the cost-related benefits of moving to multibit cells have come with inherent quality issues.
To address these issues, Denali has teamed with several leading Flash manufacturers to provide this superior technology.
"With this new technology, Denali is addressing not only the silicon resource cost and performance needs of hardware designers developing mobile and consumer electronics", says Robert Pierce, Senior Director of Flash Products at Denali Software.
"This solution is well suited for applications that need high-density memory, direct NAND boot with enhanced performance, superior quality and high reliability".
"We are providing a newly optimised Databahn NAND system solution which enables direct boot from SLC/MLC without having to complicate the boot process".
