DTI sees opportunities in China for UK
firms

"Hence the recent transfer of research activities into China by a number of western companies".
In particular, Beck cites the investment by Chinese electronics and photonics manufacturers in improving product quality - this has risen dramatically over the last few years, especially in privately owned companies.
"We found a lot more research infrastructure and a greater willingness to collaborate than I expected", added Beck.
"In particular, I believe UK companies will find partnership opportunities with the government research agencies and with the main universities".
"To that end EPSRC is promoting university cooperation between the UK and China".
And yet, he says that the Chinese were genuinely surprised that the UK does not collaborate more with China.
"They think we have a good education system but are not very aggressive when it comes to business - unlike the US, Germany and France".
Simon Duan, DTI International Technology Promoter, agrees that the UK must not hesitate to take a more proactive role.
"The UK is actually more advanced than China in the field of high-tech products, so here we have a great window of opportunity because the Chinese really need to source UK expertise".
"But that window won't be open for long as the country is catching up fast".
"If UK companies don't act quickly, they could miss out".
