It's good to know that
even with the Cold War supposedly long over, espionage remains a
growth area in electronics. And now from the courts in the USA we may
well all learn a little more about one possible "Big Brother"
scenario.
Lawyers representing one Nicodemo Scarfo are
attempting to get a court to force the FBI to reveal the technology
which allowed them to record every keystroke their client made at his
PC in an alleged illegal betting operation.
This is one
case I'll certainly watch with interest. What was the sensor
technology used? Even more interestingly, what was the radio
technology?
Perhaps the FBI has found a way to tap into
Bluetooth - let's not forget that the 2.4GHz band was formerly the
province of military communications.. Or maybe Mr Scarfo should have
checked the credentials of the team who installed his new CCTV
system.

TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION ======================================================= 1.
Chipset simplifies fixed broadband radio systems Intersil reckons its CommLink OC-3 digital radio modem chipset will
speed up the design of fixed broadband radio systems for wireless
Internet and cellular basestation communications equipment. The
ISL87060 chipset and reference design is the first product resulting
from Intersil's strategic acquisition of SiCOM of Scottsdale, USA. It
enables low-cost, rapid deployment of point-to-point digital radio
systems for high speed wireless transmission of voice, data and video
at speeds from 4x T1/E1 to full OC-3/STM-1 datarates of 155Mbit/s to
meet the wide range of frequency plans and capacities in use around
the world. * Our system will email you this story in full.

Package aids design of mixed-signal comms systems The
latest Electronics Workbench EDA tool from Adept Scientific extends
its product offering from the board or circuit level to the system or
network level with the introduction of Commsim. Commsim is a powerful,
affordable and easy to use Windows-based simulation environment for
modelling analogue, digital or mixed-signal networks or communications
systems at the signal or physical level. The product offers hundreds
of communication and maths blocks for powerful yet intuitive design,
so modelling and simulation can be performed without having to write a
single line of code.

64bit processor bristles with peripherals Integrating a PCI controller and direct memory access (DMA)
controller with other on-chip peripherals, the 64bit TX4927 RISC
microprocessor from Toshiba improves performance and reduces component
count in the latest digital consumer applications, networking
equipment, industrial control systems and other high-speed PCI
designs. In addition, full compatibility with Toshiba's 32bit PCI RISC
processors simplifies the upgrade of existing applications that now
require higher bandwidth operation. Toshiba's new microprocessor is
based on a 0.18-micron CMOS process and uses the company's 200MHz
TX49/H2 MIPS-based core. * Our system will email you this story

Equalisers aid high-bandwidth transmission Gennum
has announced its first products for the datacomms market: backplane
and copper-cable receive-end equaliser ICs capable of operating at
serial datarates up to 10.7Gbit/s. High-datarate transmission over
copper cable or printed circuit board traces produces significant
signal distortions that greatly reduce the length a signal can travel.
Gennum's new datacomms equalisers, GN1002 and GN2001, are designed to
compensate for this high-frequency attenuation, increasing the useable
length of cable or traces in high-datarate applications.

Compact PCI board boasts 20 ADC channels Benadic
is a powerful Compact PCI 20-channel, 14bit ADC motherboard from
Nallatech. It operates at 80Msample/s with 250MHz bandwidth for
ultra-high-performance applications such as smart antenna arrays,
phased array radar, multichannel data acquisition and software radio.
With 20 tightly coupled channels integrated into a Xilinx FPGA
network, this 14bit ADC motherboard provides high-performance
analogue-to-digital data conversion on a cPCI platform.

Convertor switches communications standards Red
Lion's ICM5 convertor offers high-end features, functionality,
flexibility and affordability. The converter automatically senses
traffic to convert RS232, to and from RS422 and RS485 signals and
provides three-way 1000V isolation. It offers a convenient connection
via DB9, RJ11 or terminal block, which prevents miswiring and results
in time savings.
