Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

It's good to know I'm not alone in getting increasingly frustrated by slow Internet downloads. But, as reported in this column two weeks ago, and echoed by feedback from you, "e-rage" from slow and/or hanging downloads is a growing phenomenon.

According to a report from research company NOP Omnibus, almost two-thirds of adult web users experience stress while online. But the more worrying finding is that 75% of those who admitted to being frustrated said their most likely reaction to a slow or broken download was to give up and go for a drink.

It's not that I'm worried about alcoholism. (Let's face it, "drink" might equally apply to coffee or even chamomile tea.) The worry is that whether due to poor bandwidth or poor design, information is not reaching its target. And if that's the case, what's the point of the web?

We can all play our part in improving the situation.

First, stop sending huge unsolicited e-mails. There's nothing less likely to endear yourself to somebody than tying up their connection for 40 minutes, as one company did to me last week.

Secondly, think about the most bandwidth-efficient way of presenting your information. And if this means your web designer accuses you of living in the Stone Age, then so be it. I hate to disillusion the poets among you, but a picture (and in particular a badly compressed one) isn't worth a thousand words.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We have thousands of engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Low-cost transceiver enables in-vehicle networking

Alcatel has released an extremely low cost, single-chip LIN transceiver that provides optimum performance and safety for automotive in-vehicle-networking (IVN) requirements. The MTC-30600 transceiver achieves this by providing unlimited short circuit protection in the event of a fault. Alcatel is also helping define the standardisation of the low-cost LIN communication protocol, through its partner status in the LIN consortium.

2. DACs enable direct RF up conversion

The AD977x family of dual interpolating TxDAC+ convertors from Analog Devices allows simpler direct RF up conversion architectures that require fewer external components. This offers basestation and broadband system designers a more cost-effective solution for multicarrier 3G transmitters, HDTV transmitters and satellite systems The AD9777, AD9775 and AD9773 offer 16, 14 and 12bit resolution, respectively, support an input datarate up to 160Msample/s with 1x interpolation, and support a maximum DAC update rate of 400Msample/s with 8x interpolation.

3. Daughterboard provides 20MHz real-time emulation

RF Solutions has a new daughterboard for use with its range of ICEPIC circuit emulators. The IDB628 helps to speed the development and testing of embedded systems based on the popular Microchip PIC16F628 microcontroller. The modular system is able to provide real time emulation at speeds of up to 20MHz, and provides source level debugging in assembler or C. It also allows the user to set an unlimited number of hardware trigger breakpoints on any address or range of addresses.

7. High throughput for embedded memory

The newly launched Atmos SoC-RAM merged logic (ML) family of embedded memory macrocells enables embedded memories up to 128Mbit with bus widths as large as 1Kbit, throughput up to 400Gbit/s and minimal soft error susceptibility. The new product family builds on a partnership with NEC Electronics, announced earlier this year. It takes advantage of NEC's stacked metal-insulator-metal (MIM) capacitor cell that provides better than 400MHz random access cycle speed and very low SER well under 1000FITs per macrocell, regardless of the size.

8. Tiny SM relays save almost half the PCB space

Omron claims its latest surface-mount relay has the industry's smallest footprint, occupying just 55% of the board space of existing models. The double-pole relay is ideal for high density switching arrays and space critical applications - especially in its energy-saving single-winding form, which reduces power consumption and hence heat emitted by over 30%. The new Omron G6J occupies a board area of just 4.8 x 10.3 x 9mm.

9. Speedy hardware debug for StarCore DSPs

Green Hills Software has announced the industry's fastest and most intelligent hardware debug probe for Motorola's StarCore-based MSC810x DSPs and StarCore-based SoC embedded systems. Used with the Green Hills Multi 2000 source-level debugger and IDE, the new probe greatly simplifies the debugging of embedded DSP programs by streamlining host/target communications and handling many debugging functions previously handled by the host. The Green Hills Probe uses an embedded 32bit processor and reconfigurable logic to achieve MSC8101 host/target download speeds of 200kbit/s.

10. Four terminals for accurate resistance measurement

H Tinsley has introduced the QJ84 that provides resistance measurement over seven selectable ranges from 20mohm to 20kohm. High sensitivity makes it suitable for precision measurement of low resistance, particularly in laboratory and test environments, and its scope covers cable joints, earth bonds, switches, motors, transformers, generators, conductor resistance and other applications.
