Technical Articles and Case Studies * ...And take a look at these

I have to admit that I
am rather partial to pork luncheon meat, and so the news that the
British Government has followed the mandate from Brussels to outlaw
spam came as something of a shock. (And while we're at it, how is it
that words can become hijacked into new meanings? I'm sure the
Flintstones were similarly concerned when their "gay old time" gained
a whole new dimension.)
But back to the other sort of spam.
As one whose various e-mail addresses are very widely available, I
would like to think that I can comment on spam from both sides.
On the one hand, I receive anything up to 200 e-mail messages
per day. Fortunately, the majority of these are still "real" messages.
I have resisted the temptation to install a so-called spam filter on
the grounds that I am happy to receive newsworthy material from
anyone, and in that respect any level of false triggering is
unacceptable.
I still maintain that the tried and trusted
methods we all apply to other unwanted communications - ranging from
billboards to TV and direct mail - still apply. Simply take a quick
look, and if the message is irrelevant just ignore it. In many
respects, spam e-mail is easier to ignore than any other unwanted
message: the delete key is a wonderfully succinct and final move.
On the other hand, though, I have myself been accused of
generating spam.
Fortunately, such accusations never come
from the regular readers of the Electronicstalk Newsletter. Let's face
it: we go to great lengths to ensure that if somebody signs up to
receive the newsletter they really do want to receive it. Not only is
the sign-up form very clear in its purpose, we now will not add a name
to the list without a follow-up e-mail confirmation.
No,
strangely such accusations tend to come from people who feel it is
fine to send their news to Electronicstalk, but are not interested in
reading the Newsletter. Strange folk, one may think. But fortunately,
the UK's impending spam laws appear to cater for this phenomenon by
specifically excluding business e-mail addresses from the
legislation.
Many seem to feel that this defeats the
purpose of the exercise (in much the same way that the proposed US
laws aim to exclude any message with a clear "opt-out" clause). But it
cannot be ignored that e-mail marketing has become a very successful
medium for business-to-business communication, in much the same way
that in the past we were used to receiving printed magazines, card
packs, direct mail etc. (And it is a major plus that e-mail kills far
fewer trees than a magazine!)
The new law comes into force
in the UK on 11th December this year. It will be interesting to see
how well it is enforced.
I hope you find this issue of our
weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and
ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens
more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and
headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see
details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions
as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me
directly. Best wishes Laurence Marchini, Editor mailto:ne[-email removed-]nicstalk.com =======================================================

Coverification speeds soft-core FPGA designs Aldec has
entered the embedded systems market with a hardware/software
coverification platform. The new platform, CoVer, was developed for
FPGA designs using soft-core microprocessors. By combining Aldec's
proven HDL design entry and verification software, Active-HDL, with
its new CoVer technology, both hardware and software teams are able to
work in parallel on the same configuration of the design from day
one.

Diamond-copper composite can keep chips cooler Researchers
at Advanced Diamond Solutions have successfully created a low-cost
diamond-copper composite material called Heathru, with immediate
thermal management applications for semiconductor devices with high
power densities. With thermal conductivities demonstrated over twice
that of copper, the material will have dramatic impacts in the
microprocessor, memory/graphics, optoelectronics and power electronics
industries, where power dissipation concerns are paramount.

Packet processors master voice over IP networks The
ZL50111 family are the first packet processors capable of sending high
volumes of TDM traffic - up to 32 T1/E1 streams - over IP/Ethernet
networks with the same voice quality and service flexibility as
conventional, TDM-based telephone networks. With the unmatched
features of the three-chip, standards-compliant ZL50111 family,
designers can significantly improve the performance of
TDM-to-IP/Ethernet access systems, while cutting cost, size, and power
consumption.

package shrinks optocoupler footprint A family of
optocouplers with a new-style package from NEC is claimed to be the
smallest in the world. NEC's PS29 series optocouplers are housed in a
"mini-flat" package and offer considerable saving of space on the PCB,
even when compared with couplers in the current "super small outline
package" (SSOP) used by NEC's PS28 series. The new mini-flat package
has the same 1.27mm pin-to-pin distance as an SSOP. However, the pins
of the couplers in mini-flat package are bent very close to the
package, saving 30% mounting space.

Self-calibrating oscillators set new standards A new range
of self-calibrating oven-controlled crystal oscillators (OCXOs) can
outperform traditional Rubidium oscillators in many aspects. The
CFPO-SC1 self-calibrating OCXO series is designed for Stratum 2
applications and provides a free-run frequency accuracy of within
+/-16ppb over lifetime, with no external reference such as GPS. This
development from C-MAC MicroTechnology will optimise applications that
require the highest precision offered by oven controlled crystal
oscillators.
