Silicone materials support LED manufacture
Dow Corning Corporation has launched an expanded family of silicone materials for the fast-growing light emitting diode (LED) market.
Adhesive helps keep flip-chip BGAs cool
High-performance thermal adhesive combines the proven reliability and flexibility of silicone-based chemistries with a silver filler to achieve high thermal conductivity.
The adhesive is undergoing qualification and adoption by several Chinese power module manufacturers as an alternative to adhesives currently on the market in China and Taiwan.
This new Dow Corning adhesive also addresses the need for product performance enhancement thanks to its incorporation of CV grade materials.
In CV grade polymers, most of the small siloxane molecules, which are potential sources of contamination and electrical failures, are removed by a special evaporation process.

Grease improves thermal management
Compound claims a new industry standard for thermal grease performance, with extremely low thermal resistance, high reliability and stability under adverse conditions.
By incorporating CV grade polymers, Dow Corning's new EA-9189W adhesive is especially suited for use near sensitive devices, such as open relays and unsealed electrical motors, or in very confined spaces, an important characteristic for its use in small electronic devices.
"Dow Corning has decades of experience in supplying low-volatility products and has the capability to meet a wide range of customer needs".
"We are very happy to apply our expertise and analytical services for low-volatility silicones to benefit the entire Chinese electronics industry", said Hammer Li, Greater China commercial manager for Dow Corning Electronics and Advanced Technologies Industry.
EA-9189W also features excellent thermal conductivity, providing not only mechanical protection to electronic parts but also a heat dissipation path.
It comes in a viscosity that enables fast and easy application in high-throughput assembly lines.
Dow Corning offers this new adhesive as part of an integrated solution comprising a new 2.6-litre cartridge and custom-tailored dispensing equipment codeveloped with an Asian equipment supplier.
Although EA-9189W is available in both standard 330ml and 2.6-litre cartridges, using the larger cartridges to dispense adhesive means that fewer cartridges will be left over and time spent during production changing cartridges will be considerably less.
Not only does this enable customers to increase their throughput, but it also reduces the waste stream significantly.
Dow Corning is displaying the EA-9189W adhesive and its 2.6-litre dispensing system at this week's Electronica and Productronica 2007 event in Shanghai.
