A range of new technical reports (TRs) has been approved by the DSL Forum as part of its DSLHome body of work, at its quarterly meeting in Philadelphia, USA.

These new TRs provide enhanced remote and local network management capabilities to address voice over IP (VoIP) management and quality of service (QoS) provisioning, and extend the reach of DSLHome beyond simple DSL modems and home gateways that are the hub of next generation services in the digital home.

Part of the established TR-069/TR-064 "family" of provisioning and management specifications for customer premises equipment such as gateways and routers, the latest suite of DSL Forum TRs supports the rollout of multiple services and connected devices that span the access network or wide area network (WAN) into the local area networks (LAN).

The new TRs distinguish the service provider's increased support of the networked home, going beyond fast downloads and e-mail to improved quality and configuration of enhanced services such as VoIP.

"The new management specifications enable service providers to bring enhanced services over DSL to market more quickly and efficiently".

"Not only can DSL broadband connections enable automatic configuration of routers, they can also configure devices that connect to them as well".

"On top of that, specific services such as digital voice, video broadcasts, games and conferencing can be provisioned to particular performance needs", said Michael Brusca, Chairman of the DSL Forum.

"We are working to develop a complete portfolio of technical specifications to address every aspect of the digital home, with a strong focus on IPTV and VoIP".

This growing suite of DSLHome specifications enhances service providers capabilities beyond WAN to LAN management, and establishes a model for addressing the variety of new devices coming online.

There is still more to come from the DSL Forum, as recently launched work addresses set top box management and enhanced provisioning of networked devices for the residential and business DSL subscribers.

All TR specifications are available from the DSL Forum website.
