Standard aims to ease VoIP interoperability
A new technical report provides subscribers with common feature sets for VoIP devices, and paves the way for increased interoperability for VoIP services.
Technical Report 122 (TR-122) has been published by the international DSL Forum to identify a set of standard functions for voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) terminal adapters.
As part of the DSL Forum's expanding DSLHome body of work, the new specification is a significant development for the efficient rollout of VoIP devices worldwide.
TR-122 "Base requirements for consumer-oriented analogue terminal adapter functionality" provides subscribers with common feature sets for VoIP devices, and paves the way for increased interoperability for VoIP services.
This latest technical report from the DSL Forum will enable successful VoIP deployment and management by equipping service providers with the tools for seamless, cost-efficient offerings of VoIP services.
By specifying consistent functionality across devices and service providers, TR-122 also addresses VoIP customer experience and enhances the technology's ease of use.
TR-122 builds on the DSL Forum's earlier specifications TR-094 and TR-104 for multiservice delivery for home networks and provisioning parameters for VoIP customer premises equipment (CPE).
"Service providers worldwide are increasingly placing VoIP deployment at the top of their value-added services agenda, and customers already have a wide range of VoIP services and devices to choose from", said Michael Brusca, Chairman and President of the DSL Forum.
"Industry implementation of TR-122 will assist in attaining ubiquitous VoIP services".
DSL is the world's most prevalent broadband access technology, accounting for over 60% of subscribers receiving broadband services.
With this latest technical report, the DSL Forum continues its leadership role at the forefront of technical specifications development, advancing the implementation of new broadband services worldwide.
