German Duraswitch licensee Schurter has developed a new design for use by Adolf Nissen Elektrobau in traffic routing systems The new panels add Duraswitch MagnaMouse technology to Schurter's PushGate keyboard

Used in passenger-warning systems for traffic routing, the handheld device is operated by drivers of highway department trucks and controls a camera mounted on the trailer.

"Since this is a handheld device and the operating personnel are known for their rather rough handling, there could not be any operating elements sticking out that could be broken off due to abusive handling", said Thomas Helbling, Team Leader Sales and Design Export, Schurter.

"Nissen also required very good tactile switching response, since the operator might well be wearing work gloves during operation".

Helbling continued: "Another special feature was the fact that the keyboard was to be used to align the camera mounted on the trailer so as to have a view toward the rear street traffic.

A joystick was originally proposed for this purpose, which would have easily enabled this type of positioning.

But in the end, Nissen decided against using a joystick due to its lack of robustness.

We realised that only the Duraswitch keyboard with the integrated MagnaMouse could meet all of these requirements".

The Duraswitch MagnaMouse is a multidirectional cursor control that allows for cursor movement in a flat-panel design.

This technology offers durability and environmental sealing improvements over alternative cursor technologies and allows digital or analogue design options.

MagnaMouse works with rubber or hard keycap overlays and basic flat-panel polyester overlays.

MagnaMouse is easily integrated with PushGate or other pushbutton technologies into one thin panel, eliminating secondary assembly processes.

Tim Kuhn, Vice President Business Development, Duraswitch added: "The ease of designing and manufacturing MagnaMouse and Duraswitch's PushGate pushbutton offers great benefits over other technologies.

Incorporating the MagnaMouse into a single, durable panel saves costs in both piece parts and maintenance expenditures".
