Large pushbuttons are key to packaging machinery

Duraswitch licensee Eastprint is producing switch panels using PushGate Large Key pushbuttons for IntelliPack's SmartBagger and SmartAim packaging equipment.
PushGate technology was chosen because it enabled an ergonomic interface using odd-shaped pushbuttons.
Duraswitch PushGate Large Key technology enables uniform actuation force and feedback across over-sized or odd-shaped buttons.
The standard large-key construction allows for keys to be manufactured significantly larger than the half-inch keys found on most keyboards using one switch element.
"In the design, IntelliPack determined that the elongated, oval switch enhanced operator accuracy and speed in choosing the right buttons".
"The buttons are easy to see and find".
"PushGate Large Key technology provides an ideal solution that could not have been accomplished with a traditional tactile membrane switch", said Tom Bianchi, Vice President Sales and Marketing, Eastprint.
IntelliPack has pioneered the industry's most technologically advanced foam-in-place packaging systems to help maximise packaging productivity while eliminating unexpected downtime.
The SmartBagger uses eight oval pushbuttons for different bag sizes, then a separate five-key panel for general controls.
The SmartAim handheld packaging system also uses the SmartBagger style five-key general control panel.
"We set out to design the best machines in the industry", said George Bertram, Vice President, IntelliPack.
"While we have made significant internal technical improvements over previously available equipment, the switch panel is an important piece because that is what people see and touch".
"Our customers have commented that they like the feel of the PushGate and that is a unique differentiator versus our competition".
"Industrial equipment is a good target market for our technologies".
"Eastprint has shown great success in identifying applications where our technology provides significant benefits", said Tim Kuhn, Duraswitch Vice President Business Development.
"Equipment operators are often standing at the machine all day".
"PushGate offers a friendly user interface that can withstand an industrial environment".
Kuhn stated: "Shapes often provide better intuitive interface".
"For example, a stop switch in the shape of a classic stop sign immediately alerts the user to the button function".
"The IntelliPack pushbuttons are a good example of how our Large Key technology enables the more design capability to achieve the best user interface".
Duraswitch PushGate is unique patented pushbutton technology that combines the advantages of discrete mechanical and flat-panel membrane switches into one design.
Using the simple combination of a metal actuator and a permanent magnet, PushGate offers superior tactile feedback that does not degrade over time or use.
Because it uses the natural force of magnetism instead of the mechanical operation of flexing domes or springs, PushGate is substantially more durable than conventional switch technologies.
