A new guidebook has been published by the Electronic Components, Assemblies and Materials Association as a service to EDS exhibitors.

A new guidebook, "Planning for profitable meetings at the Electronic Distribution Show and Conference" has been published by ECA, Electronic Components, Assemblies and Materials Association, as a service to EDS exhibitors, with support from the Electronic Distribution Show Corporation According to Robert Willis, ECA President, the new guidebook stems from the premise that EDS is more multi-dimensional than typical trade shows, and manufacturer participants in particular have to recognise and plan around its unique dynamics

The new publication will be supplemented at EDS 2006 (2nd to 4th May 2006, Paris Hotel, Las Vegas) with an on-site "playbook" to help participants qualify customers, structure effective dialogue, and expedite logistics.

The on-site playbook is an industry first, Willis says, whereas the advance planning guide is a new and updated third edition.

"Close to 20% of the people at EDS each year are first-timers - either new with their companies or working at companies that are new to EDS", Willis explains.

"They don't necessarily recognise when they come to Las Vegas that EDS is actually two events in one - an exhibit event used by manufacturers with open distribution, and a conference event used by manufacturers with established and limited distribution".

"Nor do they necessarily realise the other key dimensions of EDS - education, networking, and media exposure".

"But the most important thing for everyone at EDS to recognise is that is an appointment-centred gathering, and as such, it requires a plan for each type of encounter".

The contents of the new booklet are: an overview of the ECA and why it publishes the planning guide; basic principles for success at EDS; an overview of EDS; a description of the six attendance categories (manufacturers of products distributors sell, suppliers of products distributors use, electronic component distributors, manufacturers' representatives, industry associations, and trade press and analysts); why they attend; planning participation for functionality and results; appointment scheduling; making appointments effective; booth tips; hospitality guidelines; marketing at EDS (including follow-up); action items to remember; and on-site logistics.

Also provided are planning forms to help exhibitors set up their EDS schedules, set objectives, develop agendas for each meeting, and follow-up post-show.

Supplementing the planning guide and the on-site playbook, ECA will present a workshop aimed specifically at first time EDS participants, on Monday afternoon at 1300 local time.

This programme will focus on how to get the most out of the EDS experience, building on the advice presented in the planning guide, and allowing for interactive discussion and audience questions.
