Greener coating passes machine trials
Specialist manufacturer of high quality automated and manual adhesive dispensing and selective spray coating equipment evaluates water-based conformal coating.
Electrolube's sprayable water based conformal coating (WPBs) have been subject to a successful trial at PVA, a specialist manufacturer of high quality automated and manual adhesive dispensing and selective spray coating equipment Electrolube provided PVA, an award winning, New York based firm, with the high performance WPBs conformal coating for trials on their most flexible selective coating and adhesive process system, the PVA650

Green conformal coating is easy to apply
Aquacoat is a water-based conformal coating from Electrolube that combines excellent physical and electrical properties with extremely low VOC levels and a nonflammable formulation.
Using the FCS200-ES atomised spray valve, Electrolube's water based conformal coating was trialled by applying the coating at various speeds, pressures and heights onto acetate sheets.
During the tests, the patterns were inspected for cleanliness, overspray and overall finish.
Jon Urquhart, Senior Applications Engineer at Precision Valve and Automation (PVA) comments: "We are very pleased with the performance of Electrolube's WPBs coating".
"The processes through the machine worked well, the consistency of spray was good and there was no need to modify anything, no thinning required".
"It was very easy to use due to its water based formulation and left no solvents to clean up".
The PVA testing overview concluded that the WPBs coating sprayed well with decent control and surface finish.
The optimum atomising air pressure was approximately 50mbar to allow for little to no overspray but still to provide enough pattern control of the spray.
PVA also experienced no need for extraction, masks or use of solvent for cleaning.
As an environmentally friendly coating, WPBs eliminates the hazards associated with solvent based conformal coatings.
The aqueous conformal coating, WPBs, is nonflammable with low levels of VOCs.
The coating can be soldered through without highly toxic gases being produced as it is free of isocyanates.
It is also phenol-free and therefore noncorrosive to cadmium and zinc plate.
WPBs provides ease of inspection by fluorescing under UV light and offers excellent dielectric properties and resistance to mould growth.
Available in two formulations, WBP is the standard product for dipping and brushing and WPBs (sprayable) has been formulated for use in selective film coating equipment.
Meeting the requirements of DEF-STAN, MIL and UL, Electrolube's formulation and application of conformal coatings are designed to meet international approvals including European and US military specifications.
