Elo TouchSystems has developed a novel 15in LCD touchmonitor that includes a three-stripe, ergonomically placed magnetic stripe reader (MSR).

Elo TouchSystems has developed a novel 15in LCD touchmonitor that includes a three-stripe, ergonomically placed magnetic stripe reader (MSR) The MSR is incorporated into the monitor housing and designed to flow with the elegant styling of the monitor

The new monitor, an enhanced version of Elo's popular Entuitive 1525L 15in LCD touchmonitor, is available with a USB or serial connection for use with Elo's AccuTouch fivewire resistive or IntelliTouch and SecureTouch surface wave touch technologies.

The new touchmonitor with MSR is aimed at applications that require the use of credit/debit cards, loyalty cards, and other card transactions.

"At Elo, we pride ourselves on quality and reliability", says Mike Sigona, Elo's Marketing Manager Europe.

"Unlike so many monitors that use a card swipe, Elo's MSR does not look like a tacked-on afterthought, but blends seamlessly with the colour and lines of the host monitor.

To appreciate the level of integration, we've installed a 3D animated view of the product on our web site".

Elo has positioned the MSR unit ergonomically on the top, right corner of its 15in LCD touchmonitor so that the user can swipe the card flat with a natural action.

"Cable management is one of the many assets of an Elo touchmonitor", adds Sigona.

"We used our skills to ensure that the MSR connection cables are completely hidden from view and do not distract from the smooth lines of the monitor itself".

According to Sigona, this is accomplished through the use of a unique USB hub inside the monitor that allows a single USB connection/cable to carry both the touch interface signal and the MSR data.

The serial version has two cables/external connectors to carry both touch and MSR data.

The MSR conforms to Microsoft's Human Interface Class specification version 1.1 for the USB interface and supports OLE for Point of Sale (OPOS) for the serial interface.

To ensure an elegant look, Elo has also further integrated the MSR by colour matching it to the 1525L touchmonitor's own housing in beige or grey.

Most MSRs access just two stripes on the user's card.

Elo has extended its MSR technology to read the third data stripe, normally reserved for applications such as customer loyalty programmes.

"We see a wide variety of applications for our new 1525L 15in LCD touchmonitor with MSR", says Sigona.

"While we know that it will be most popular in the retail/point-of-sale marketplace, we also see applications in medical environments - at nursing stations or in pharmacies, for example - where a credit card or patient ID is required.

Other applications include customer loyalty and identification card programmes".
