Spoonts, a half-century veteran of the electronics industry, is a past president and chairman of ERA and one of only 23 members of the association's Hall of Fame.
Spoonts led a committee of White Pin members who developed the criteria for the annual award.
Nominees must be from ERA member firms, must have been involved in ERA activities and leadership, on the local and/or national levels, for a minimum of two years, and must be willing to devote significant volunteer time to ERA in the foreseeable future.
"Chet Zaslow met and far surpassed those criteria," says Spoonts.
"He has held a major leadership position in ERA as chair of the Chapter Leadership Council since 2001".
"In that role, he has served as the rep faculty member for ERA's annual Chapter Officers Leadership Training (COLT) program, coordinated the Chapter of the Year programme and moderated chapter leader meetings at ERA conferences".
"He's done all that while also serving as an officer of the New England Chapter and member of the ERA national board".
"Chet is the model of generosity in his volunteerism, and he has a deep commitment to both his profession and ERA.
He's exactly the type of rep this award is meant to recognise".
Mark Motsinger, CPMR, of Wallace Electronic Sales in Kernersville, NC, has succeeded Spoonts as chair of the ERA White Pin Group.
Also a past president and chairman of ERA, Motsinger served on the award development committee and as one of the judges who selected Zaslow as the first recipien".
"We had a number of highly qualified nominees, which speaks very well of ERA and of the talented reps who contribute their time to our organisation," he says.
"Chet Zaslow has been a highly effective leader within ERA for 15 years, and he still answers every request of him with an immediate 'yes.' Many volunteers would have backed away from such heavy involvement after so long, but Chet just keeps on giving back to his association and his fellow reps".
Zaslow will be able to use the scholarship to defray the cost of attending the next ERA national conference and/or to participate in other educational events to maintain his CPMR (Certified Professional Manufacturers' Representative) status.
"The intent of this award is to honour both Jess Spoonts and each recipient," Motsinger adds.
"Jess has been dedicated for decades to helping reps improve their professionalism, so tying the award to continuing education is an ideal fit".
