DC/DC step-down convertor is 90% efficient

A fully integrated DC/DC step-down convertor achieves efficiency of more than 90%, and the wide input voltage range reaches from 5 to 40V.

Elmos Semiconductor's E910.27 is a fully integrated DC/DC step-down convertor, which achieves efficiency of more than 90%.

The wide input voltage range reaches from 5 to 40V, the output voltage can be adjusted to just under the supply voltage.

Additionally the automotive-qualified standard component offers a 12uA typical shutdown current.

Engineering samples of the E910.27 are available.

The serial production will start in the fourth quarter of 2007.

The easy to use component with two-position control supplies high efficiency with few external components within the whole voltage range.

The integrated 1.6A power transistor is run by PFM, so that high efficiency with both low and high output currents is guaranteed.

As a special highlight the convertor is provided with three possible reference voltages.

A 1.22V reference permits the assembly of voltage sources with high accuracy, and the 0.2V reference, in LED applications for example, allows low loss current measurements.

The third reference can be adjusted from the outside, eg by means of DAC, so that variable voltages and currents can be generated.

The maximum switching frequency of 300kHz permits the use of small coils and capacitors, which saves board area and costs.

Moreover, the chip is able to operate the end transistor while permanently switched on in order to achieve the required output voltage with the lowest possible input voltage.

The maximum output current can be adjusted by a resistor.

It protects the package against damages caused by start-up and short circuit and avoids over-sizing of components and costs.

The DC/DC step-down convertor is especially suitable for application in battery-powered systems.

Further application examples are LED driving, power supply and output stages for use in automotive applications.
