Custom designs for hinges, handles and locks

An EMKA UK product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team Aug 26, 2004

Emka produces many custom configured hinges, handles and locks for international household names, whether they be rack/cabinet manufacturers or end user corporate specifiers.

Emka produces many custom configured hinges, handles and locks for international household names, whether they be rack/cabinet manufacturers or end user corporate specifiers.

Current examples include double hinge bodies for cabinets with restricted frame access, parallelogram style linkage systems for wide opening doors, large handles with built-in cylinder and rod mechanisms, multifunction handle and lock escutcheon and a very smart swinghandle with built-in electronic keypad.

The company's custom programme offers customers the opportunity to have specialist designed cabinet hardware quickly and at low cost - so that designs, features or functions previously thought impractical can now be brought into the realms of possibility - thus enhancing the completed cabinet.

Emka has developed this exclusive customer specific programme from its advanced standard products and a modular design philosophy as the basis for development of individual solutions, in accordance with customers' corporate design requirements for handles, locks, hinges, gaskets or other enclosure components.

These corporate custom solutions are supported by experienced sales engineers, in conjunction with the factory design/engineering department, using 3D modelling software.

Continuity in the development process is therefore guaranteed by consistent application of modular principles.

This ensures lowest cost and greatest functionality for each project and subsequent ones derived from it.

The feasibility of any project often depends on minimising completion time, so rapid prototyping techniques are used to generate fast accurate models and minimise project cycle times.

Direct in-house linking of design department to model making EDM machines and then to tooling, milling and grinding etc.

further ensures minimal changes from evaluation to production sample Completion of each custom project at Emka follows - directly in-house - from concept through design development and production in a variety of technologies, including zinc die injection, thermoplastic injection moulding, polyurethane foam sealing, powder coating, turning and milling, punching and bending.

Follow-on tools for metals and composites, as well as bending and moulding tools for zinc die and plastic are all produced in-house.

Many of these technologies are fully automated and integrated into the lean manufacturing process, which ensures flexibility of production to accommodate custom projects.

These also often involve stock profiling to achieve the best in cost and supply chain efficiencies, thus for very large or ongoing projects, stock can be established at a main warehouse against defined delivery schedules.

Individual custom products are exclusive solutions and not for general sale.
