Marks and Spencer has been testing a novel transponder IC in a small-scale trial to evaluate the use of RFID technology to improve supply chain efficiency and product availability for customers.
RFID chip is first to ISO18000-6A
The EM4223 is a new UHF RFID integrated circuit which is fully compliant with ISO18000-6A and the EPC 64bit and 96bit code structures.
In addition to the IC, EM Microelectronic has also introduced the EM4094 13.56MHz RFID demonstration reader as a reference design and development tool kit.
The low cost, low voltage EM4094 can be operated between 3.0 and 5.0V supply voltage with output power up to 200mW.
It integrates an 848kHz BPSK decoder, sparing the microcontroller from having to perform this demanding ISO14443 Type B specific operation, and thus allows the reader manufacturer to select a cost effective microcontroller.
Furthermore, the circuit offers multiple receiver input for high communication reliability.
The EM4094 stands out from the competition by letting the reader manufacturer select the microcontroller that best suits his or her processing and power requirements.
Such a design contributes to a better flexibility and versatility of the IC allowing it to be used in a wide range of reader systems with subcarrier frequencies between 212 and 848kHz.
It covers the ISO14443 A and B, Sony FeliCa or ISO15693 standards and operates with NFC devices.
In addition to the new circuit, EM Microelectronic is releasing its EM4094 RFID demonstration reader.
This 13.56MHz RFID reader is compliant with the ISO14443 type A and B, Sony FeliCa and the ISO15693 standards supporting all mandatory commands.
The demo reader also supports mandatory, optional, custom and proprietary commands of EM's transponder ICs: the EM4034, EM4035, EM4135 and the EM4006 read only IC.
The development tool kit serves as a reference design for reader manufacturers; it comes with a fully functional reader, 7.5V AC/DC power supply, EM4034 and EM4035 tags in credit card format, a SIM card with cryptographic functions, USB cable and CD ROM.
Both the EM4094 IC and RFID demo reader (part number EMDB408) are now available from EM Microelectronic.
