Emcore Corp has released a new generation of 32-channel 1550nm wavelength QAM-256 transmitters for broadband cable television dense wavelength division multiplexing networks.

Emcore Corp has released a new generation of 32-channel 1550nm wavelength QAM-256 transmitters for broadband cable television (CATV) dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) networks Quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is a combined phase and amplitude modulation scheme to increase the transmission bandwidth over CATV networks

QAM-256, using 256 amplitude levels to encode increased bits of information, represents state-of-the-art technology for digital overlay on analogue networks providing superior linearity of the optical device.

Approximately 20Mbit/s of bandwidth, or one high- definition TV (HDTV) channel, can be provided at one radio frequency (RF) modulation over a QAM-256.

The QAM transmitter provides this level of superior performance over 32 channels.

Furthermore, the optical transmission wavelengths, in the vicinity of 1550nm, are in the ITU grade for DWDM applications.

This technology is long sought after to harvest the bandwidth in the CATV allocated frequency band and will allow CATV multiple service operators (MSOs) to provide premium triple-play services: HDTV, data, and voice over IP (VoIP).

"Capitalising on our expertise in analogue RF and internal laser components, we are proud to be the pioneer in making this technology and product available to the CATV MSO industry", commented Dr Hong Hou, Vice President and General Manager of Emcore Corp's Ortel Division.

"These transmitters will reduce costs and enhance performance while dramatically increasing the capacity of traffic on conventional DWDM networks".

"This product enables MSOs to increase the capacity in their already deployed broadband networks and provide additional value-added services such as HDTV, video-on-demand (VoD), cable telephony, high-speed Internet, and other interactive services", continued Dr Hou.

"This product also enables MSOs to utilise their existing HFC infrastructure to compete with the RBOC's FTTx deployment".

This product family is available now.
