Gigabit transceivers take fibre to the home
Emcore has begun sampling its 1.244Gbit/s burst-mode, ITU G.984 compliant APD/TIA for the rapidly expanding gigabit passive optical network (GPON) OLT market.
Emcore has begun sampling its 1.244Gbit/s burst-mode, ITU G.984 compliant APD/TIA for the rapidly expanding gigabit passive optical network (GPON) OLT market.
Emcore was the first to bring into production the 1.25Gbit/s burst mode APD/TIA products for Gigabit Ethernet passive optical networks (GEPON) OLT applications.
Building on this product line, Emcore has created APD/TIA packaged components for the for the rapidly expanding North American GPON OLT fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) market.
"Emcore's latest addition to the APD family of products has been driven by the rapid growth in GPON deployments expected in 2007".
"Emcore has successfully served the GEPON market over the last few years by working closely with strategic suppliers", said Dr Tom Tumolillo Jr, Product Line Manager for Devices and Components at Emcore's Fibre Optics Division.
"The product teams at Emcore and Vitesse have worked closely to bring to market the first integrated APD/TIA GPON OLT solution that does not require external timing circuits based on the Vitesse VSC7718 GPON OLT TIA".
Dr Tumolillo added: "We are very excited to see our customers' adoption of our latest GPON OLT APD/TIA products".
Matthew Dru, Product Marketing Manager for the Networks Products Division at Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation in Camarillo, California, added: "We are pleased to have supported Emcore in the GEPON OLT burst mode development and are looking forward to supporting Emcore's expansion into the rapidly growing GPON OLT market in 2007".
According to a report on 2nd March 2007 by Dittberner Associates, a market research and consulting firm specialising in the telecommunications industry, the FTTH market is up 58% year-on-year to 4.6 million ONT/OLT ports shipped in 2006 with the number of ONT/OLT ports increasing to 6.8 million ports in 2007.
Most of the shipments through 2006 were for the GEPON market.
However, Dittberner predicts that in 2007 the GPON market will expand rapidly with the expectation that Verizon will add 1 million FTTH subscribers mostly using the new and faster GPON standard that will initiate a large-scale adoption of GPON in North America.
The APD/TIA family of products is part of the Emcore FTTH PON packaged component product line for use in applications in both the GEPON and GPON - ONU/OLT - market segments.
The Emcore FTTH PON product portfolio is currently on display at the OFC/NFOEC conference in Anaheim, on Booth 3142.
