Epcos has a new series of multilayer metal-oxide varistors (MLVs).

Epcos has a new series of multilayer metal-oxide varistors (MLVs) This innovative new range of varistors, called the SIOV series, is designed to replace conventional symmetrical zener diodes and transient voltage surge (TVS) diodes in the protection of vulnerable semiconductor components against electrostatic discharges (ESD), voltage bursts and surges

Not only do SIOV varistors offer higher degrees of protection, they also save valuable PCB real-estate and cost compared with their zener and TVS diode alternative and are ideal for telecoms, consumer, automotive and a host of other applications.

The new SIOV varistors are surface mount devices (SMD) and are offered as single-, two or four-line versions providing bidirectional protection.

Additionally, a special range of MLV varistors is offered for automotive applications.

The single line standard MLV varistor range is available in either a 0402 1.7 x 0.6 x 0.5mm or 0603 3.0 x 1.0 x 1.3mm package, based on footprint, compared with a TVS diode solution they save, respectively, 58% and 70% on PCB space.

It is also available housed in a 0805 or 2220 package.

The range is able to handle surge currents up to 1200A and operating temperatures up to 125C.

No plastic or epoxy packaging assure a flammability rating better than UL94V0.

SIOV array varistors with four-line bidirectional protection are available in a 612 2.8 x 2.6 x 0.9mm or 508 1.85 x 1.7 x 0.9mm package, providing a saving in footprint over the TVS diode alternative of 25 and 47%, respectively.

Besides savings in PCB space, other advantages of an MLV solution over a conventional TVS diode include bidirectional clamping, higher surge current handling capability, and lower capacitance as a function of bias voltage and temperature, with MLV behaviour comparable to the excellent filtering properties of multilayered ceramic capacitors.

The SIOV array MLVs feature up to 30A protection against surge currents, silver platinum termination and an operating temperature range from -30 to +85C.
