SAW filter has mixed TV transmissions
covered
A novel switchable SAW filter incorporates both analogue and digital modes for use in mixed analogue/digital set-top-box designs.
In cable TV systems, most free TV programmes are transmitted on analogue channels and premium content on digital ones So that viewers can receive all channels, set-top boxes will continue to have an analogue and a digital path in the future
Until recently, separate SAW filters were needed for these paths because of the different modulation techniques that they use.
As both techniques are in practice never used at the same time, Epcos has developed a switchable SAW filter with an analogue and a digital mode.
This design reduces costs, as only one SAW filter is required.
The desired mode is selected via a control circuit for channel toggling.
The filter design patented by Epcos thus reduces component count significantly.
