Quarter bricks have minimum environmental impact

An Ericsson Power Modules product story

Combining competitive pricing with excellent performance and reliability, Ericsson Power Modules' PKM-E quarter bricks are designed to offer minimum environmental impact to meet future legislation.

Combining very competitive pricing with excellent performance and reliability, Ericsson Power Modules' PKM-E quarter bricks are designed to offer minimum environmental impact to meet future legislation.

Featuring an open frame design with components mounted on one side only, the modules are very cost effective for OEM and CEM customers with applications in communications, avionics, industrial and medical equipment.

Particularly useful in industrial applications, PKM-E modules are available with 24V inputs - not always the case with competitors' products.

The first two products within the PKM-E family, PKM2510EPI and PKM4510EPI, are 18-36V input/3.3Voutput, and 36-75V input/3.3V output devices, respectively.

Offering a high efficiency figure of typically 90% at 3.3V output, half load, the modules feature an industry standard quarter brick footprint and pin out, and are just 8.5mm high.

This makes them extremely suited for narrow board pitch applications with board spacing down to 15mm.

The modules use patented synchronous rectification technology and address both the industrial and emerging telecom market for applications in the multiservice network by specifying the input range in accordance with ETSI specifications.

Factors driving the demand for this type of product are price, design for environment and better performance.

The convertors are assembled using lead-free solder and a PCB with halogen-free flame retardant and electroless nickel immersion gold (ENIG) plating.

This means that future legislation such as the EU RoHS directive can already be met by the PKM-E family.

This DfE feature is added without any price premium.

Ericsson Power Modules will be launching additions to the PKM2000E and PKM4000E series throughout the first half of 2004.

The emerging PKM-E family of modules will embrace units with output power ratings up to 50W or output currents up to 20A.

Output voltages will be in the range 1.2 to 15V, input voltages will cover 18-36V for PKM2000E, and 36-75V for PKM4000E.

Input to output isolation is 1500VDC and the modules have a 7Mh predicted MTBF at 40C.

The PKM-E family complies with all the requirements for brick products, namely: standard pinout, remote control, sense leads, output voltage adjust, overvoltage protection, overtemperature protection, and monotonic rise at startup.

Coupled with a complete programme that addresses all the commonly required output voltages, this means that Ericsson Power Modules' PKM-E family is a very viable, no compromise, cost effective platform that can replace more costly products with minimum qualification efforts.
