Blade secures networking applications

An Erlang Technology product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team Aug 18, 2004

The Power Search Blade (PSB) is a standard PCI form factor blade that can be inserted into servers, PCs, switches, and routers to provide hardware assisted content searching and inspection.

The Power Search Blade (PSB) is a standard PCI form factor blade that can be inserted into servers, PCs, switches, and routers to provide hardware assisted content searching and inspection.

It is ideal for emerging and mission critical applications such as detection and prevention of virus and worm attacks.

The PSB also provides protection from denial of service (DoS) and port scanning attacks with its dedicated protection engine.

Erlang's PSB currently supports two Gigabit Ethernet ports simultaneously against predefined signatures and traffic patterns.

The company confirms that several customers are in various deployment stages of PSB and many more are in the evaluation stage.

Although most of the initial customers are in the security industry, the company expects PSB applications to expand into content switching, packet-based billing, URL filtering, web switching, firewall, IP security (IPSEC), and Secure Socket Layer (SSL)-based systems, which makes the PSB an essential product in growing market segments.

In addition to the USA, Erlang is targeting Japanese and Chinese-based carrier/service and security solution providers with the PSB.

The PSB is compatible with Windows and Linux operating systems, allowing a seamless integration of third-party software.

Being PCI standard compliant, PSB can be plugged into any PCI-based equipment such as security appliances, networking equipment, PCs and servers, and transforms them into high performance, highly differentiable, value-added products with a minimal development effort.

The PSB's complete set of support software, well-defined user interface and standard compliant hardware allows users to significantly reduce the time for integration and application development.

PSB comes with comprehensive software interfaces, named PSB Manager and PSB APIT, for management and integration with third-party software.

Via PSB Manager, users are notified of the status of on-going security attacks, signatures matched, and they can also update signatures, and set attack thresholds, all in real time.

The PSB supports wire-speed rates while performing 100% detection regardless of the type and length of the packet.

It performs matches found anywhere, unanchored in the packet header and payload without any external CPU intervention.

PSB can also support up to 1500 signature patterns.

It can be used in a promiscuous mode to monitor network traffic only or can be used in an inline mode to detect and block undesired packets.

The PSB also provides statistical information gathered from incoming traffic such as data bandwidth, number of packets, and types of protocol used.

"PSB is a hardware accelerator for current software solutions".

"PSB is also an enabler for applications to scale to multi-gigabit rates to match increasing data volume at higher wire speeds", said Suneel Rajpal, Erlang's VP of Sales and Marketing.

"Many such software solutions cannot be scaled to the next level of performance by increasing raw processing power alone".

"The demand for content searching is rapidly increasing in new services such as VoIP, video-on-demand (VoD), and streaming video".

"Empowering security and reliability of these services is easily achieved through PSB".

"It is also possible to interface PSB with other devices such as crypto engine or TCP offload engine depending on the end application".

The PSB is the first product in the hardware content search engine space announced by Erlang.

The company intends to augment this product with similar products that have higher line rates and more functionality as such upgrades are demanded by the market.

The Erlang Technology Power Search Blade is available now.

Pricing varies by configuration and quantity.
