Esterel Technologies reports that its Scade Suite, already a de-facto standard among the aerospace and defence industry, is experiencing very fast deployment in the rail transportation market Inside the European Union some initiatives for standardisation have emerged, in order to harmonise the countless national standards, norms, operational instructions and safety requirements in the rail/transportation domain

What does this imply for the suppliers of railway equipment?.

They are increasingly exposed to competition on an open market environment and have at the same time to make sure that their systems are working everywhere in Europe, because the new standards allow access to all the local markets to all of them.

Based on this it is highly desirable to make also software development more efficient.

Therefore Esterel Technologies created a "certified software factory" that can in fact be imagined like a factory for line production of a variety of embedded software products.

It must be able to take in and process all necessary "raw and intermediate products" (specifications, architecture descriptions, algorithms), all the time corresponding with the relevant standards, procedures and processes implied by the suppliers and their customers.

It provides a complete set of tools for design, validation, verification, and certified code generation in order to produce the end product: a high-quality and high performance set of code, integrated in the system Scade Suite Code Generator has been already certified in 2004 by TUV Sud, according to the IEC61508 safety standard which has a good relevance for the rail transportation industry.

Since this certification, the adoption of Scade Suite among prominent rail automation suppliers has undergone a very quick development.

The main current usage of Scade Suite is focused on interlocking and train control systems applications, spanning communications-based train control systems (CBTC), signalling, ground stations, automatic train operations, critical graphics display, as well as other field applications (axle counting, level crossings etc).

As already achieved in the avionics industry, thanks to the certification of the Scade Suite Code Generator, Scade Suite users are able to claim credit for the suppression of the low level software verification activities (ie unit testing) thus saving up to 50% of their development cost.

In addition to its IEC61508 certification, the new release of the Scade Suite Code Generator, released today, Scade Suite KCG 5.1 will also apply for Cenelec EN50126, 50128 and 50129 certification before the end of the year.

Esterel Technologies has also released today the white paper "Efficient development of safe railway applications software with EN50128 objectives using Scade Suite", which can be downloaded from the company's website.

Eric Bantegnie, President and CEO of Esterel Technologies, commented: "Having succeeded in the aerospace, automotive and heavy industries with Scade, it was actually an obvious move to go after the rail transportation industry as its constraints with regards to safety and certification are extremely high and the cost reduction and quality impact offered by Scade Suite is tremendous".

"We strongly believe that the 'certified software factory' concept of Scade Suite is very relevant for this industry which is facing new technical and economical challenges for both the main line and the mass transportation markets".
