Esmertec has released Version 3.0 of its Jbed RTOS which combines fast JVM with a hard real-time operating system Using the Jbed RTOS, it is possible to develop embedded products entirely in the Java programming language, including real-time code - if applicable - and device drivers

Jbed can run on the "bare metal" (directly on the underlying hardware without an additional OS) or on standard operating systems.

Jbed is more efficient than conventional JVMs due to its built-in compilation technology and the tight integration of the JVM into the OS.

Bytecode is always executed as native machine instructions; there is never any interpretation.

The release 3.0 meets the requirements of resource-constrained devices in the telematics, set-top box, retail and industrial automation market where it is already widely used.

The Jbed RTOS is completely written in the Java language.

This provides strong memory protection without a division into kernel and user space.

User code can be executed very efficiently, because system calls do not need to cross an expensive boundary between user and kernel mode.

Among other enhancements, the latest version of Jbed RTOS incorporates a small-footprint implementation of Abstract Windowing Toolkit (AWT), and a Vfat compatible file system.

"This release is a natural step into the future of an all-Java device", said Thomas Hauser, Product Manager of Esmertec.
