Infineon puts Java into mobile computing

An Esmertec product story

Infineon Technologies has licensed Esmertec's Jbed Micro Edition platform to deliver optimised Java solutions for high performance mobile computing to the new E-Gold+ and S-Gold baseband chipsets.

Infineon Technologies has licensed Esmertec's Jbed Micro Edition platform to deliver optimised Java solutions for high performance mobile computing to the new E-Gold+ and S-Gold baseband chipsets.

As a result, mobile device manufacturers will be able to deploy a mobile Java computing platform that will help service providers, developers, and end users to dynamically load and execute Java applications at native speed on the Infineon based device of their choice.

Esmertec has adapted its Java compiler technology to support Infineon's C166 based chipsets by providing a fast bytecode compiler (FastBCC) and a static host compiler for the C166 targets.

The FastBCC allows to compile on the mobile device dynamically downloaded Java MIDlets to native code and to run them in native speed on a C166 chipset.

The static host compiler allows precompiling on the host Java MIDlets to execute them in native speed on C166 based mobile devices.

The E-Gold+ baseband chipset is powered by Infineon's C166 core, a 16bit microcontroller, and the S-Gold baseband chipset is powered by an ARM9 core.

Both chipsets are used in a variety of applications and grant device manufacturers the choice to build mobile devices from low end up to high end.

Infineon has licensed Esmertec's Jbed Micro Edition Platform in order to integrate Comneon's industry standard GSM/GPRS technology and the innovative APOXI application framework with Esmertec's well-respected high performance Java virtual machine, Jbed Micro Edition CLDCT, to offer a complete system solution.

"Esmertec's goal is to provide high performance Java solutions with minimal power consumption", said Hansruedi Heeb, CTO of Esmertec, "Our Jbed product line will enable Infineon's customers to download and run Java technology-based mobile services with high performance and extended battery life.

We have once again demonstrated the ability to understand and successfully address our customer's technical and time-to-market requirements".

"Enabling our customers to build up systems with a high degree of personalization and flexibility is a key issue in today's mobile world", said Klaus Hau, vice president and general manager of Wide Area Wireless.

"Offering a powerful solution for Java is part of Infineon's strategy to strengthen the market share of our customers".

"Providing a high-performance Java solution that integrates with and takes full advantage of Comneon's APOXIT application framework will create excellent business opportunities for our customers in the new mobile application arena", said Thomas Lindner, senior director of marketing for Comneon.
