Virtual machine combines Java with i-mode
The new Jbed Micro Edition CLDC virtual machine supports both the DoJa Profile 2.0 from NTT DoCoMo and the MIDP 2.0 profile, in parallel.
The new Jbed Micro Edition CLDC virtual machine supports both the DoJa Profile 2.0 from NTT DoCoMo and the MIDP 2.0 profile, in parallel.
Esmertec is the first company in Europe to offer a compact and highly portable Java virtual machine with this dual capability.
The Jbed Micro Edition Platform provides the Java virtual machine, associated libraries, APIs and provisioning services that i-mode providers need in order to provide rich and exciting applications that i-mode users can install on-demand.
Implementing Java technology on i-mode offers users more interactive content and allows for deploying newer, more dynamic services, such as reserving airline and concert tickets, finding a good restaurant, checking train schedules and city maps, downloading ringtone melodies and games, sending and receiving email, and accessing the Internet directly.
According to a recent report from Datamonitor, NTT DoCoMo's i-mode trials in Europe started with a user test group on 20th December 2001, with the commercial launch taking place in 2002.
Content was supplied in the following categories: information, communication, entertainment and transaction.
Datamonitor believes that when presented with a compelling mobile data service, European users will show the same tendencies as their Japanese counterparts and use the entertainment potential of the i-mode service.
"The mobile industry worldwide has suffered from stagnating voice ARPUs (average revenue per user), which is why the sector has embraced mobile data so wholeheartedly as the opportunity for future growth.
NTT DoCoMo's i-mode technology, which enables rich and colourful content, has already demonstrated its ability to generate additional revenues", said Hansruedi Heeb, CTO of Esmertec.
He added: "It is evident that data revenues are growing and that i-mode has succeeded in evening out the sharp ARPU decline experienced.
i-mode, as the first mobile data service, has therefore demonstrated that mobile data can become the platform for future growth for operators and phone manufacturers".
Thomas Hauser, Product Manager, Esmertec, added: "With the new product we offer operators, such as Telefonica Moviles, KPN Mobile, E-Plus and Bouygues a dual mode solution to deploy both MIDlet and i-Appli applications, seamlessly, on any cellular phone platform".
He added: "With both MIDP and DoJa profile support, cellular phone manufacturers will be able to support a broader range of application for their customer.
This unique solution will enable operators to increase their ARPUs by offering customers the option of downloading both types of Java applications (MIDlets and i-Applis) on their mobile phone without the need for any special adaptations.
I am happy to work together in this project with our partners from Japan, who brings DoJa verification knowhow to the project and ensures a high quality of implementation".
