Excelsys Technologies has launched a high current output module for its 3gen series of configurable AC/DC power supplies featuring an adjustable output voltage which can go as low as 1.45V DC The new 70 series module is specifically designed to meet the requirements of the emerging generation of high-performance, ultra high density microprocessor chips

Adjustable over a range of 1.45 to 5.6V, the 70 series output module provides designers with a low-risk power supply option for special systems incorporating newly available, high performance chip technology, and is especially suitable for use in fast track development programmes.

According to Garry Tomlins, Commercial Director of Excelsys Technologies: " It is our aim to provide developers with low risk power options when specifying complex systems incorporating latest generation silicon with multiple power requirements.

Our new 70 series module is targeted at putting Excelsys at the forefront of the latest-generation power systems where voltages below 2V are required.

The first to market wins in this business, where time to market is critical.

Our 3gen power solutions enable us to configure a power system with multiple outputs to support mixed logic applications and to deliver five working production units in 48 hours at zero programme risk.

We provide a fast track to market with absolutely no setup costs, and eliminate the risk and cost associated with a custom power solution".

Excelsys' 3gen series power supplies are available with 400, 600 or 1000W power output capabilities, and offer users a choice of one, two or 13 isolated outputs, each of which can be configured from any of nine output modules, spanning voltages from 1.45V to 59V.

All models in the series offer conversion efficiencies of around 75%, and meet the EN61000-3-2 standard for harmonic current content, due to take effect in 2001.

The 3gen series is based on a completely modular design concept.

A two-transistor forward convertor front-end drives a planar magnetic main transformer, which then couples to a high frequency magnetic amplifier in each of the modular output stages.

This approach enables the power supplies to be cost-effectively configured for an extremely wide range of applications demanding from one to 13 voltage rails.

The output voltage of each of the nine output modules can be adjusted over a wide range via a multi-turn potentiometer; for example, the 1.45V module can be adjusted from 1.45 to 5.6V, and the 24V module can be adjusted from 12 to 28V.

The 70 series output module also incorporates a specially developed adjustable current limiting circuit and electronically driven voltage adjustment.

Excelsys' 3gen series power supplies are particularly suitable for use in applications such as multiple processor network applications, control and high-specification measurement and audio/broadcast equipment.

All 3gen 70 series power output modules provide a single fully floating output, and have zero minimum load requirements, making them exceptionally easy to integrate.

Line regulation is typically held to within +/-0.1%, and load regulation is typically +/-1.0% for a 75% change in load demand.

The modules can be connected in parallel to increase current capacity, and feature comprehensive protection against over-voltage, over-current and over-temperature conditions.

The power supplies offer a choice of three input modules, to provide a total capacity of 400, 600 or 1000W.

Each of these modules features a universal input that accommodates any voltage within the range 88 to 264VA (at 47 to 63Hz) or 150 to 370V DC.

The power supply will continue to hold up for a minimum of 20ms after the loss of AC power, and a mains failure detect function is available as an option.

The 4-slot unit measures 127 x 270 x 65mm (W x D x H) and the 6-slot unit measures 187 x 270 x 65mm.

Both units are fitted with integral cooling fans with a 34dB(A) rating (the 6-slot unit has two fans) and employ high quality screw terminals for all power connections.

All Excelsys 3gen series power supplies have a 3000VAC input/output isolation rating and carry a full set of international safety approvals, including EN60950 and UL1950.

The supplies also meet the rigorous EN55022 Level B requirements for conducted emissions, and comply with the relevant parts of EN61000-4-x for immunity to electrostatic discharge, electromagnetic fields, fast transients, line surges and voltage dips.
