Module tests Ethernet from end to end
EXFO Electro-Optical Engineering has added a dual-testset feature to its Packet Blazer FTB-8500 Series 10/100/1000Mbit/s test module.
EXFO Electro-Optical Engineering has added a dual-testset feature to its Packet Blazer FTB-8500 Series 10/100/1000Mbit/s test module This feature provides end-to-end Ethernet testing of traffic via the FTB-400 field-testing platform

Module provides advanced Sonet/SDH and OTN test functions in a single module to address the demands of commissioning and troubleshooting 43Gbit/s networks.

Chromatic dispersion can be characterised with high accuracy from a single fibre end and testing polarisation mode dispersion from a single end is also possible.
The dual testset feature enables end-to-end measurement of throughput, frame loss rate, burstability and round trip latency as specified by leading standards bodies.
An FTB-400 platform, equipped with a Packet Blazer module, can test traffic generated via a remote FTB-400 or vice-versa.
Remote control operation of the distant Packet Blazer is accomplished through the Ethernet service under test.
This latest feature allows end-to-end testing without the need for any external communication path between the two Packet Blazer test modules.
This simplifies the testing process and removes the need to carry additional modems, other communication devices or setting up dedicated communication lines.
In addition, the need for a technician at the remote test unit to send, receive and analyse results is eliminated.
"This new feature significantly reduces the cost of testing carrier Ethernet-based services across any transmission technology", said Giovanni Forte, Vice-President of Product Management at EXFO Protocol, a wholly owned subsidiary of EXFO.
"By providing control of the remote unit through the service under test, performance results from both directions are available at one location.
As a result, service providers save time, money and reduce the deployment of technicians in the field which helps to increase test equipment return on investment (ROI) and reduce overall service costs".
The Packet Blazer 10/100Mbit/s and Gigabit Ethernet dual testset feature expands the capabilities of EXFO's FTB-400 UTS universal test system platform, which provides test and measurement capabilities including 10Gbit/s Sonet/SDH testing, optical spectrum analysis (OSA), optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR), polarisation mode dispersion (PMD) as well as chromatic dispersion analysis.
