RTOS puts PowerPC into embedded storage

AMCC and Express Logic have developed a combined solution using the PowerPC 440SPe with the ThreadX RTOS for intelligent embedded storage devices.

Applied Micro Circuits Corp and Express Logic have developed a combined solution using AMCC's PowerPC 440SPe and Express Logic's ThreadX RTOS for intelligent embedded storage devices such as RAID controllers, storage area networking (SAN) equipment and other embedded storage and networking applications ThreadX's small footprint, fast response times and ease of use are ideally suited for AMCC's robust, high-bandwidth, PowerPC 440SPe

Express Logic's ThreadX is tailored for the resource-constrained requirements and the cost sensitivity of a wide range of embedded applications.

As a royalty-free RTOS, ThreadX has been widely embraced and is currently deployed in over 200 million electronic products, such as digital cameras, printers, wireless networking, storage devices, and medical equipment.

With a footprint of under 10Kbyte in most applications, ThreadX is small and offers submicrosecond interrupt response and context switching.

Advanced features such as a unique pre-emption scheduling algorithm, priority inheritance and fast timer management combine to address the most demanding performance requirements in embedded device development.

ThreadX RTOS support for the AMCC PowerPC 440SPe delivers immediate productivity benefits and optimised performance for a wide range of storage device applications.

The first processor to offer three independent PCI Express interfaces and one PCI-X version 2.0 interface, the AMCC 440SPe is ideally suited for Host-Attached RAID controllers and storage area networking (SAN) equipment.

The 440SPe supports one eight-lane PCI Express upstream interface and two four-lane downstream interfaces.

In addition, the 440SPe supports a 64bit PCI-X interface, which operates at double datarate (DDR266), with a peak bandwidth of 2.13Gbit/s.

The PCI Express and PCI-X interfaces can function as an opaque PCI Express to PCI Express or PCI Express to PCI-X bridge, allowing data to be transferred directly between these buses.

The processor's CoreConnect 128bit processor local bus (PLB) is implemented with a two-way crossbar architecture; each segment has separate 128bit read and write databuses that may operate concurrently, providing up to 10.4Gbit/s of total on-chip bandwidth at 166MHz.

"We are delighted by the availability of ThreadX for AMCC's PowerPC 440SPe processor", said Charlie Ashton, Director of PowerPC Software, AMCC.

"ThreadX offers a simple, yet advanced solution for customers looking to leverage the processor's stringent real-time performance and high-bandwidth I/O.

ThreadX's aggressive real-time strengths, combined with AMCC's award-winning PowerPC architecture, gives embedded storage developers a fast, small-footprint, royalty-free solution that they can confidently use to build their products".

"Customer demand for ThreadX on the AMCC 440SPe indicates that the combination of ThreadX and the 440SPe offer a strong solution for intelligent storage devices", noted William E Lamie, Express Logic President.

"AMCC has delivered a very impressive processor for such applications".

"Our extensive experience and long-time support for the PowerPC architecture is a strong complement that enabled us to respond to customer interest and quickly make ThreadX available for the 440SPe architecture".

With ThreadX, PowerPC 440SPe developers can immediately design software applications using the AMCC reference card.

Express Logic also provides a fast file system, FileX, and a full TCP/IP networking stack, NetX, also available for use with the PowerPC 440SPe.

With these comprehensive tools and Express Logic's world-class technical support, developers can enhance product quality and reliability and rapidly deploy products to market at a significantly lower cost.

ThreadX, NetX and FileX are immediately available for the PowerPC 440SPe, with royalty-free licences starting at $12,500. Request a free brochure from Express Logic ...
