Power switches meet "green" standby
targets
Three new Fairchild power switch (FPS) products feature burst mode operation in standby mode (consuming less than 0.1W at 265V AC) to support the International Energy Agency's "1W initiative".
Three new Fairchild power switch (FPS) products feature burst mode operation in standby mode (consuming less than 0.1W at 265V AC) to support the International Energy Agency's "1W initiative" aimed at reducing standby power losses to less than 1W The FSD200, FSD210 and FSDM311 significantly reduce bill of material costs while achieving high-efficiency and obtaining regulatory compliance

Dual-output buffer for DDR SDRAM modules
Fairchild Semiconductor has introduced a dual-output registered buffer for 184-pin, 2.5V PC200/PC266, 72bit-wide registered double data rate (DDR) SDRAM modules.
Bus hold makes logic more predictable
Fairchild Semiconductor has made a number of additions to its LCX family, the logic industry standard for 3.3V applications.
The unique integration of each of these FPS products minimises external components, simplifies designs, and lowers costs in target applications, such as battery chargers and adapters, mobile phones, PDAs, MP3s, C-TVs, monitors and PC auxiliary power.
These highly integrated off-line power switches combine a fully avalanche-rated SenseFET (LDMOS) for current sensing (650 or 700V minimum breakdown ratings) with a voltage mode PWM IC, and they are equipped with a built-in startup switch, eliminating the need for an external startup resistor.
The FSD200 also eliminates the transformer auxiliary winding.
"With their 1W standby power, Fairchild's new FPS devices are efficient and environmentally friendly", said Fairchild's Product Marketing Manager for the Fairchild Power Switch, SangTae Im.
"In addition, these integrated products provide performance superior to mosfet/controller or RCC switching convertor solutions, while offering the benefits of reduced board space and improved reliability through various protection circuits".
The Fairchild power switch products are self-biased and protected, linear control current-to-duty cycle converters with open drain output.
They operate from 6.7 to 21V at a frequency of 134kHz with frequency modulation for low EMI.
Additional features include internal soft start to reduce the overshoot current at plug in, overload protection, over current protection and internal thermal shutdown protection.
Both the FSD200 and FSD210 are available in 7-pin DIPs, and the FDSM311 is available in an 8-pin DIP.
Beginning 2004, these products will be available in lead-free packaging that meets or exceeds the requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020B and is compliant with the European Union requirements, which will take effect in 2005.
