Fairchild has extended its number-one position worldwide for discrete and analogue components that deliver and manage power, according to market research firms Databeans, Gartner and iSuppli.

Fairchild Semiconductor has extended its number-one position worldwide for discrete and analogue components that deliver and manage power, according to leading market research firms Databeans, Gartner and iSuppli Green Fairchild power switches have been a particular success, growing more than 60% during the last three quarters, providing highly efficient power conversion for a wide variety of end markets including consumer electronics, industrial and white goods

Fairchild expects to announce new additions to this line at Electronica in Munich in November, extending its range to a new class of applications.

With power products representing 74% of Fairchild's sales, the company continues to focus on the world's demands for electronic products that converge applications onto smaller, lighter and more powerful devices.

In high demand by European consumers and businesses alike, end market products include more efficient automotive ignition devices reducing fuel consumption; power supply solutions for energy efficient motor control in white good applications; products that meet 1W initiatives to drive down standby power consumption in set top boxes, colour TVs, DVDs and chargers; high resolution flat panel displays for home entertainment; and ultraportable laptops the size of a paperback.

The market for power management semiconductors to efficiently convert, control and condition power is estimated to reach $9 billion worldwide by 2008, according to market research firm Databeans.

These components are used in all electronic devices to optimise system power - extending battery life, reducing the costs of consumer appliances and meeting new energy standards.

"Six years ago, Fairchild recognised the opportunity in power components and aggressively focused our business on building a leadership position globally", said Kirk Pond, Fairchild's President, CEO and Chairman of the Board.

"Turning that vision into products that meet our customers' requirements with state-of-the-art design and manufacturing facilities around the world has established Fairchild as 'the power franchise'".

"Power semiconductor content for the automotive, consumer appliances, PC, home media and display markets is projected to grow at least twice as fast as the electronics end market through 2008, according to market analyst iSupply", Pond continued.

"By applying our resources to developing new power products such as our very successful green Fairchild power switches, expanding and optimising our manufacturing capacity and providing global power resource centres in support of customer design requirements, we've grown our power business quickly and consistently".

"Sales of power products have increased 31% during the last three quarters and we've established the number-one position globally in this fast growing segment".

"We're seeing exciting innovation in end market products ranging from consumer electronics to communications to computers", Pond commented.

"Faster chips and higher performance demands consume enormous levels of power".

"Without components to effectively manage power, many of these new applications wouldn't be feasible due to extreme heat issues".

"Additionally, the costs of energy are growing at staggering rates".

"New worldwide regulations on standby power to reduce energy demands are driving whole new classes of devices".

"Fairchild's analogue power management and power discrete components are helping our customers to meet these demands, while enabling next-generation applications".

Fairchild continues to win new designs across multiple end markets.

Recent Fairchild design wins include: ultraportable components in Sony/Ericsson, Motorola, Samsung Electronics, Siemens and Kyocera products; manufacturing display components in Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and FHP products; consumer white good components in Daikin Industries and Samsung Electronics products; computer and motherboard components in Asustek, ECS, Gigabyte and Micro-Star International products; network infrastructure equipment components in Ericsson, Cisco Systems and Lucent products; and automotive systems components for Delphi.
