Load managers integrate more functions
New high-current low-loss load switches ensure a high degree of flexibility, enabling reduced design cycle times and costs for ultraportable applications.
Fairchild Semiconductor has extended its IntelliMAX load management portfolio with the addition of 11 new high-current low-loss load switches.
The new devices ensure a high degree of flexibility, enabling reduced design cycle times and costs for ultraportable applications such as full-featured smart phones, high-capacity storage MP3 players, next-generation digital still cameras and notebook computers.
The extended operating range (up to 400mA) also makes them well suited for low-voltage industrial, telecomms and medical equipment.
Each FPF21XX device integrates more protection, control and fault-monitoring features into the smallest package (SOT-23) than competing 200/400mA products.
This comprehensive feature set includes: controlled switch turn-on to reduce inrush current and supply transients; current limiting with device options (200 or 400mA); undervoltage lockout; thermal shutdown to reduce excessive heating or system damage; hard-short protection with fast response time (20ns) for hard short conditions; fast current-limit response time (3us) for nominal overcurrent conditions; a flag for fault conditions with options for fault blanking, auto-restart functions; and options for reverse-current blocking capability.
The optional reverse-current blocking feature offered by the FPF2108/09/10 devices ensures unidirectional current flow - a key benefit for systems connected directly to a battery or DC power source where current must only flow in one direction.
In addition, all FPF21XX devices provide a low (sub-1uA) shutdown current to conserve battery life.
Power is a major challenge facing designers of ultraportable applications.
Operating over a wide input voltage range of 1.8-5.5V, the FPF21XX devices optimise system power usage, thereby maximising battery life.
The integrated IntelliMAX advanced load management devices also offer designers significant space- and cost-savings.
compared with traditional discrete solutions using ICs and multiple active and passive components, the compact IntelliMAX load switches achieve a high degree of functionality in less space.
This integration saves valuable circuit board area, reducing time to market and ultimately saving bill-of-material costs.
"Our latest series of 5V, high-current FPF21XX IntelliMAX products offer designers an off-the-shelf solution to solve a variety of power management issues", said Chris Winkler, Fairchild's Market Development Manager for Portable Products Applications.
"As the industry continues to rapidly migrate to portable battery power, Fairchild remains committed to offering designers a complete portfolio of load management solutions reducing design complexity and design cycle times, while simultaneously reducing component count to save board space".
The IntelliMAX FPF21XX devices are available in small-footprint, low-profile SOT-23 packages.
These products are lead-free (Pb-free) and meet or exceed the requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020B and are compliant with the European Union requirements now in effect.
