Update for surround-sound software
The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS and Thomson have added two new elements to their MP3 Surround demo software.
WorldDMB (referring to digital multimedia broadcasting) is an international, nongovernmental organisation promoting the adoption and implementation of Eureka 147 based technologies worldwide.
Broadcasters are looking for highly efficient audio codecs when introducing new services.
They are supposed to offer best audio quality at lowest transmission costs as well as new features like surround sound to differentiate from existing analogue on-air programmes.
Using HE-AAC as a supplement to Layer-2 and the new MPEG Surround standard on top of those stereo coding schemes meets these requirements perfectly.
The professional audio encoding and decoding implementations available from Fraunhofer IIS support the full codec spectrum of MPEG-4 HE-AAC, Layer-2 and MPEG Surround "We promote our Layer-2/HE-AAC with MPEG Surround solutions under the brand name 'DAB Surround' which has proven its extraordinary qualities during various field trials with public broadcasters and car manufactures across Europe", says Harald Popp, Head of the Multimedia Real-Time System Department at Fraunhofer IIS.
"Now we are ready to bring those technologies on-air and to market".
DAB Surround brings 5.1 sound to Digital Audio Broadcasting and guarantees a smooth, compatible and cost-effective introduction of multichannel sound to DAB.
Broadcast stations can easily add DAB Surround encoding to their existing infrastructure and still support all stereo receivers.
At the WorldDMB meeting in Erlangen participants can enjoy in-car DAB Surround sound.
